About the Author
Bruce K. Waltke (PhD, Dallas Theological Seminary; PhD, Harvard Divinity School), acknowledged to be one of the outstanding contemporary Old Testament scholars, is professor of Old Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida, and professor emeritus of biblical studies at Regent College in Vancouver. He has authored and coauthored numerous books, commentaries, and articles, and contributed to dictionaries and encyclopedias.

Charles Yu is currently pursuing doctoral studies in the Department of Hebrew and Semitics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

One Of The Best Books Out There On Old Testament Theology

As a seminary student I am quite familiar with a lot of books that act in teaching Old Testament history and theology. Mr. Waltke's book is just about the best book a teacher could ever use and a student could ever read. The book is not aimed at simply exploring God's actions in the text of the Old Testament. It begins by exploring what exactly is the Old Testament and how students (and teachers for that matter) can learn about Old Testament theology in order to give them a greater understanding of the OT in terms of overall Biblical theology. When the book finally begins to explore the books of the Old Testament, the reader has a wonderful foundation in order to not only understand what each book of the Bible has to say, but ultimately what God wants His people to understand. Whether we are talking about a student in seminary such as myself or the casual (but well read) everyday fellow. If there is a problem with the book it could be that the way the book looks, large and overbearing, one might feel that he could easily get lost in the text. Not true. Mr. Waltke's personality flows along the pages, you are getting less a textbook and more of a one-to-one classroom education, mindful, caring, and from the author to the reader. Take the first chapter that deals with the Creation account in Genesis. Too many times you see Old Earth vs. Young Earth vs. Theistic Evolution being tossed around in academics. Mr. Waltke reminds us to go beyond these debates though important in their points)and go into what the text actually says, word for word, meaning for meaning, toward what the ancient Hebrews of the Exodus would understand them all the way to how the first Christians and Christian communities would possibly understand the text. I would highly advise anyone who is interested in truly understanding God's important messages of the Old Testament and to use these messages in their everyday lives and in their ministries, pick up this book. You wont regret it. I would also suggest Tremper Longman's work as well.

Magisterial! Outstanding Old Testament Theology!

I was really impressed with the richness of this book. Bruce Waltke's goal in writing this book is to help Christians understand the OT, understand God's plan for them, understand how the OT relates to the NT, and how it relates to their lives today. Bruce assumes the authority of the 66 books of the canonical Protestant Bible. He teaches that the Old Testament's main storyline is about the kingship of God, God's kingdom as it breaks into our world (I disagree, I think it's about God's plan to redeem the world).

Waltke adopts a Reformed, covenant approach to interpreting scripture, rejecting the dispensational approach of his youth. He divides the Bible into several blocks of writing: the Primary History (Genesis-2 Kings) Wisdom Literature, and prophetic literature.

There is a great chapter on narrative theology, addressing the different points of view in the text (God, the human characters, the narrator). I also loved the chapter on poetics and intertexuality. The beautiful symmetry and chiasm in Genesis 1-11 sheds much light on the interpretation of this passage. He also discusses typology and how some texts evoke and alude ot others within the canon.

In the Primary History section of the book, Waltke discusses the gift of the cosmos, how God overcame chaos and darkness to create a habitable world. He contends that Genesis 1 is designed to counter pagan ideas about the construction of the world. The world itself is not divine, God is.

He also discusses the literary form of Genesis 1-2:4a, contending that it is narrative history, not myth, and that it reflects an Ancient Near eastern Comogeny, an example of God's accomodation to the viewpoints held by the people of the time.

There is a discussion about the gift of Adam, or mankind. He believes that the "us" in 1:26 refers to the heavenly court, not to the second person of the Trinity. He mentions that Psalm 8 and Hebrews 2:5-10 are reflections on Genesis 1:26-28. There is also a discussion of theological anthropology: the Hebrews words of body, soul, heart, spirit, and life.

Waltke also teaches that men and women are equal in creation, parenting, worship, prayer, and giftedness, but that the male is the hierarchical, government head, just as the Father as the governmental head of the Trinity.

Waltke also defends the essential historicity of the events in the Garden of Eden, the life of Abraham and the Exodus, as well as the fall of Jericho. For Waltke, Genesis-2 Kings really lays out the central theme of the OT.

I loved this book. I gained a lot of insight from the text from Waltke's exegesis. I highly recommend it.

Most Outstanding Old Testament Theology on the market

Having known Bruce Waltke personally for over thirty years and valuing his scholarship as one of the finest OT scholars in the world, I find his OT Theology to be his premier work. Typical of Bruce's high standards, this volume displays decades of his rigorous exegesis and meticulous care for the accuracy of the Biblical texts along with his masterful development of the themes of the OT and how each of them find they find their fulfillment in the person and work of Christ in the New Testament. No difficulties are avoided and every theme is traced from its inception carefully through to its climax in a New Heavens and New Earth. Bruce is one of those rare individuals who gives us both "roots and wings," and as the Spanish poet Juan Ramon writes "the wings take root and the roots fly." Bruce's theology also includes an invaluable summary of the poetics of Hebrew narrative and poetry, so that readers will discern not only "what" the Bible says, but "how" it says it. The text is easy to read, clear, and insightful beyond measure. This magisterial work will serve as a beacon of doctrinal purity and light for many generations, and not merely because of it's supreme scholarship, but also because of Bruce's humble heart and passion for holiness that pervades the text itself.

Oh how I love Rick Lax's books...this one is just the latest in a series of well-written, smart, humorous, and just flat-out cool books. I am somewhat (see: extremely) obsessed with Vegas, so of course I went bananas when I read this book--it just has so many random fun facts/stories about Vegas--things you would probably never know otherwise. You will feel as though you are right there with him as he travels through the world of Vegas attempting(or not) to make sense of it all. There are also a ton of great color pictures to go along with the stories. When I can't travel to Vegas, I pick up a Rick Lax book b/c it's the next best thing.

You Don't Know Jack

First of all, Playboy Interviews are simply the best and I have several volumes to asset to that statement. The interviewer doesn't throw softball questions and ask the questions the reader wants to know -- no patronizing or star worshipping or mouth dropping ahhh. After reading the interview, I was left with the thought that Jack is a man of mystery and he totally likes it that way. Clearly confident and comfortable who he is and only he really knows who he is. Some of called him arrogant but I don't believe that is the case. This is 40 pages of pure joy -- that covers 2 actual interviews 30+ years apart and you will find not much about him has changed. Reading this interview was a perfect way to spend an hour and even offered a chuckle or two.

Not formatted for keyboard kindle

I'm sure this is probably a fascinating interview with Jack Nicholson, but whomever formatted it decided to not make it Kindle friendly. You need a magnifying glass to read the text and it cannot be increased via the font resizing. Bad move. Maybe on the Kindle Fire, etc., it will be more manageable, but for those of us who are using the classic e-ink technology, it is unreadable.

About the Author
Richard Alan Miller did his undergraduate work in theoretical physics at Washington State Universiy, with graduate work in solid-state physics at the University of Delaware. Then he spent over a decade in biomedical research and development. He has been published in several international journals for his work in both physics and philosophy. He has also taught courses in small farm agriculture, and is the author of Native Plants of Commercial Importance, Forest Farming, Computers on the Farm, and Successful Farm Ventrues. He has also been a regular contributor to the sustainable farming magazine, Acres U.S.A. and has published a national newsletter, The Herb Market Report.

The result is a book that fills an important gap between highly technical treatments of quantitative research methods and comparatively loose presentations on fieldwork and participant observation. Book = Lecture

This book is written as if you were sitting in his class listening to a lecture. Most of what he says in class is the exact same. It can be simple and confusing at times but I think that is just the material. He tends to ramble which appears in his book to some extent. It is not a step by step book but rather one designed to make you able to create your method.

A very down-to- earth approach to doing cross-cultural research from scratch as it were. Language is a bit more casual than I would prefer ( the author seems to ignore that "data" is a plural noun, and as such he writes "data is" throughout the book). That becomes tiring and takes away from the overall quality of reasoning of the book.

I love this book. Anyone who has had a basic science class or who has been introduced to the 4 amino acids that are the building blocks of all life can access this information. Dr. Ross has a teaching style that helps one understand how cancer arises and how molecular medicine can "set it straight".

Thirty-three year old Mark Sheridan lives in San Francisco. His life revolves around his job selling advertising… and the time he spends at the gym with his best friend, Dave. Things change for Mark drastically when his noisy neighbor is found dead and a new girl, Sylvia Martin, moves in.

…Now with his neighbor gone, the girl of his dreams has moved in. Sylvia is a strange girl with a lot of secrets, secrets she is unwilling to reveal to Mark. His friend Dave and Dave's fianc�, Gail, both are taken aback by Sylvia's eyes… She also wears a satanic symbol around her neck, which troubles them as well. Unfortunately for Mark, all he can see is a gorgeous girl that he wants to be around all the time.

The fact that Sylvia doesn't like to go out during the day doesn't seem to faze him; her story about an allergy to light makes sense to him. Sylvia comes to Mark's apartment every night, but in spite of her flirting and kissing, she (initially) refuses to have sex with him. Mark takes that as her desire to go slow—little does he know!

Sylvia is a vampire and for some reason, she wants Mark. She even painted a portrait of the two of them together years ago. Has she dreamed about Mark as he dreamed about her? Even when Dave and Gail get married and a priest, Father Callen, advises Mark that Sylvia is a vampire, he refuses to leave her… Does Sylvia want to turn Mark? Will Mark let her if she wants to? Is he willing to turn his best friend away for a girl he has only known a few weeks?

This was an interesting take on vampires and it is told in the first person by Mark. Sylvia also has some very strange sexual desires and they are revealed in detail in this book. I enjoyed the story, it was an easy read, and Mark and Sylvia were interesting characters.

Mark Sheridan’s life is taking a strange turn; three curiously related murders had taken place within twenty-four hours of each other, and both murder scenes had happened within close proximity to him. The strangeness only intensifies with the arrival of Sylvia Martin from London, a mysterious pretty girl with weird eyes. She moved in after Mark’s loud and obnoxious neighbor was murdered in his apartment one night. Enchanted by her, Mark could not help but feel truly infatuated with her, ignoring his friends’ advice to be cautious, including a priest’s ominous warning about Sylvia. The Vampire Girl Next Door is a fast-paced, immersive supernatural fiction by Richard Arbib.

Narrated from a first person point-of-view, readers could tell right away that protagonist Mark is an average guy with a busy life schedule – gym, Kung Fu and film classes as well as working thirty hours per week selling advertising for a weekly newspaper. Readers don’t have to wait long for the eerie supernatural scenes to start. Right at the start of the novel Richard Arbib introduces Sylvia, whom Mark’s friend Dave caught staring at him from outside the gym’s window. As he walked home, Mark was attacked by three young thugs but he was saved by someone or something that swiftly killed two of them without being seen. We could already guess who his ‘savior’ was.

Overall, the story’s pace is definitely a fast one, and yet it does not feel rushed at all. The plot is adroitly written and I myself feel drawn to the mysterious Sylvia. This is perhaps the best supernatural fiction that I have read this year.

Mark Sheridan’s new next-door neighbor is beautiful and mysterious, and he’s sure that her face is one he’s seen in his dreams.

Some odd things about her stand out — her unusual eyes, her strange sleeping habits, even her jewelry all make her unique to Mark, who quickly labels her his soul mate, even at the risk of alienating himself from his best friend.

The beautiful and intriguing Sylvia soon comes to dominate Mark’s life, teasing him with sex, her unexplained past and seemingly bottomless supply of money, and her in-your-face lifestyle.

"The Vampire Girl Next Door" is a novel following the arrival of the mysterious Sylvia in the vicinity of Mark, and the two begin to hit it off immediately. Despite all the warning signs that surround him, Mark may have to learn the hard way about Sylvia and her past she just won't speak up about.

"The Vampire Girl Next Door" is a choice pick for one looking for a romance with a supernatural twist, highly recommended.

Vampire romance hypnotizes men, women alike

For the past decade, the genre of supernatural romance has permeated all forms of media, from “True Blood” on television, to the “Twilight” series on bookshelves and the silver screen. These stories feature a female main character that falls hopelessly in love with vampires, werewolves and other supernatural creatures.

Local author and TMCC professor Richard Arbib has taken this formula and flipped it on its head with his new novel, “The Vampire Girl Next Door.” The story follows Mark Sheridan, a San Francisco thirty-something with a penchant for working out and James Bond films. As people begin dying near him, he starts to suspect foul play. But these worries vanish from his mind the minute he meets his new neighbor, Sylvia Martin, a cultured Englishwoman with a sophisticated taste for her apparent age and an inexplicable love for golden showers. The two fall in love immediately, and what follows is a cavalcade of awkward confrontations, sexually tense outings and much more than Sheridan could have (or would have) hoped for.

“The Vampire Girl Next Door” has a type of role reversal, placing the man in the victim role with a very sexual female making the advancements. Mark Sheridan is no twerp either. The novel begins with a back alley brawl more reminiscent of “Bloodsport” than “Interview with the Vampire.” Nevertheless, Mark is powerless to the irresistible Sylvia.

Arbib creates a fairly realistic protagonist, forming a man that is likable, tough, and cool, while adding a certain vulnerability to Sheridan… Just as “Entourage” is the guy version of “Sex and the City” and professional wrestling is the man’s soap opera, Arbib has made a guy-oriented “Twilight” fully equipped with a dirty sense of dark humor…

“The Vampire Girl Next Door” by Richard Arbib (Highgate Books). When a beautiful, mysterious seductress named Sylvia moves in next door, Mark can’t see the downside, even when the girl of his dreams becomes the stuff of nightmares, once again proving the universal allure of the crazy girl. Sylvia remains tauntingly secretive about her past as she… perform(s) gymnastics on the ledge of the Golden Gate Bridge, embarrasses him at his best friend’s wedding, and shocks him with her unusual sexual proclivities. What more could a guy ask for? Arbib writes, “I wanted to create a realistic and believable vampire novel that combined horror, romance, and humor,” and I can testify he’s succeeded.

Richard Arbib was born in New York City, earned a master’s degree in English and creative writing at San Francisco State University, taught English in Vietnam, and composition and literature to college students in Nevada. He has had short fiction published in Mensa Bulletin and articles published in Integra--The Journal of Intertel.

Getting to know a Vampire

I've read a few Vampire books and seen a few Vampire movies and TV shows, but I've never been introduced to a more believable Vampire than the one created by Richard Arbib. I had a bit of trouble identifying with the protagonist, but his character development was good, and the story was well crafted and enjoyable to read. Definitely worth getting a copy.

Neo-Vampire--a must read

Mark's community is suddenly invaded by strange deaths. Distraught his neighbor becomes a victim is soon forgotten. He is fascinated by his new neighbor. She has been a phanthom of beauty and love in his dreams. Unlike other books you have read and put down, you will never forget her name--Sylvia. Mark is drawn to her beauty and unusual view of the world. And he allows her to mystify him in ways, mentally and physically till she is ready to let him know she's THE VAMPIRE GIRL NEXT DOOR. Arbib takes you on a ride, twisting humanity, sexuality, witchcraft and vampirism that will not be easily forgotten. Intriguing read. I'm ready for more.

The Vampire Girl Next Door...

In looking for different material to read, I stumbled onto this book online (Amazon, of course) and ordered it June 15, 2012. As I had other books ahead of I just was able to get to it the week of October 22nd. I echo the sentiment of others when I also say, this was different that any of the vampire books that I've ever read. It's a book that held my interest to the point that, when I didn't have the book in hand, the book had me wondering where the story was going to happen next!

The main characters:

Sylvia - a proud, beautiful, mysterious girl - with a body a man could sink his teeth into - but watch out! She bites!

Mark - he's dreamed of Sylvia for years - and his dreams come true - but they WILL COST HIM! As the saying goes..."It's just too good to be true!" (Boy, I'll say!)

Although Sylvia is at best reluctant to share her secrets with Mark (for good reason), she's drawn to Mark - and, of course, Mark is instantly attracted to Sylvia. But, this relationship is very costly to Mark...will he...pay the price?

Arbib's style is straight-forward and somewhat terse for the majority of the book. His timing and descriptive style works for me (I actually laughed out loud at parts). In the end, I didn't know I was getting setup for a sequel (I hope that Arbib's at work on it - I'll buy it when it goes on sale).

I rate "The Vampire Girl Next Door"...Five stars!

P.S. This really is a slightly different vampire story for you to consider!

P.P.S. Then there's the matter of that...uh, "golden shower" that gets discussed...Ewwww! But then again, whatever "floats Sylvia's boat!" (Insistent, isn't she?)

Overall, I liked this book - and recommend it
