I Hate This Book So Much -- 5+ Stars

It's just after midnight, EST.

I flip on my Kindle to check email real quick before going to bed.

Sitting there on my homescreen is CONTACT, all shiny and glowing.

"Crap", I think. I had completely forgotten that I had preordered it several weeks before. "I'm not going to get any sleep tonight...".

I remember way back in grade-school, I used to stay up into the wee hours of morning on a regular basis, reading book after book after book. It wasn't rare for me to read multiple books a day.

But now I'm a full-time author, and I'm a busy dude.

Every day I've got books to write, publicity events to set up, interviews to schedule, and hundreds of emails to sort through.

I can't afford to stay up late reading.

Damn Johnny Truant and Sean Platt and their dastardly plot to ruin my life by writing such great books.

Because this is, in fact, one of the best books I've read all year.

In fiction writing, there's a common analogy that suspense is when there's a ticking bomb under the table. Action is when the bomb goes off.

And that's the difference between INVASION and CONTACT. In INVASION, there's a time bomb sitting under the table, and everybody's afraid to move and risk the chance of accidentally setting it off. Things are tense and suspenseful.

In CONTACT, the bomb has gone off, the aliens are here, and everything is freakin' awesome.

I don't know how Johnny and Sean pulled it off, but the took one of the most cliche, overdone ideas out there (an alien invasion) and made it totally epic.I mean, this thing makes THE WAR OF THE WORLDS look like garbage. Like, seriously, I would toss all of the works of H.G. Wells into the garbage can to make room on my shelves for INVASION and CONTACT.

I think one of the main reasons that such a cliched plot is actually good is because of the characters.

The Dempsey family (well, MOST of them...) return in this book, and they're just as likeable and hateable and relatable as in the first book. In addition to these top-notch characters, we're also introduced to some brand new characters who are downright awesome.

Seriously, as a writer myself, I envy the ability that Johnny and Sean have to whip up such realistic and unique and complex characters and toss them into a freakin' epic plot...and do it all so insanely fast.

I am now eagerly awaiting COLONIZATION, the third installment in this series, so that Platt and Truant can steal another couple of hours of my life, and bring me within an inch of missing my writing deadlines...

Slower Pace than Book 1 - still can't wait for the next book!

A good followup to Invasion, Contact takes place 3 months later and follows Meyer's family as they try to live without going crazy inside of the bunker, and the crowds of people attracted to Meyer's house because he was abducted there in the hopes that they might be abducted too. (Lots of hippies.) Not is all sunshine and rainbows, though, as some of the crowd have discovered the bunker, and are trying to break in...

I enjoyed the new characters and relationships introduced in this book, and like how nobody is safe from danger.

That said, this book is not quite as "page-turney" as the first book, owing in large part to a lot of the action taking place in a very confined space. There is a bit of travel as a few of the main characters try to find a secret research base in Utah and to travel there from Meyer's bunker without getting killed, but it wasn't just one life-threatening event after another as folks tried to cross the country from NY to CO like the first book.

Meyer himself plays a very small role in this book, although given how the book ends I expect that he will play a much larger role in the third book. While I didn't tear through this one nearly as fast as I did the first book, I am still eagerly awaiting the the next book.

Now I'm just annoyed. I could forgive the writers in volume one for not introducing us to the aliens. But I'm a third through volume two and for all intents and purposes, no aliens. I really wanted to read a good alien invasion book and now it is just getting monotonous. Sorry, have to move on.

Very entertaining,yet informative, reading for young readers

The entertainment value of this basic summary of the Incredible Hulk's story in Marvel Comics is high, and should certainly capture the attention of the proficient young readers. It's quite literate with good vocabulary for the reading level. Importantly, though it's fun. While conveying the spirit of the comic book character, Teitelbaum brings in related bits of information aimed at increasing the young reader's knowledge while stimulating youthful curiosity into learning more about the Hulk's literary predecessers, about early concerns about nuclear energy, about the cold war and its anxieties, about the fields of scientific research along with other topics.
The emphasis though is on entertainment which is what should draw the young readers into reading it, strengthening reading skills and expanding their knowledge at the same time.

Dan Woodske is the owner of the Beaver Brewing Company, a nano-brewery in Beaver Falls Pennsylvania. Among his lineup of artisan beers he is one of the only brewers in the United States to brew a Kvass year round. When researching this ancient Russian Ale he found there was little to no information out there. After a year of research he put all of his findings into one space along with recipes so you can enjoy this refreshing drink at home. Good e-book (and paperback)

I have both the paperback and e-version of this book (purchased and downloaded through Amazon), and I have no trouble viewing it on my Kindle KB, Kindle Fire, Motorola XOOM and Droid2 Global phone with Kindle App. I am not sure what device the previous users that rated the downloaded copy are using to view the book - All of my devices viewed the book without an issue!

This book is a good read, and took an evening to complete. It contained a brief history of Kvass, where it came from, what it is today, and receipes for the original beverage and expanded variants. The simplicity of the beverage was suprising. I was not aware that such a beverage existed until I visited the nano-brewery. Dan's diferent versions of Kvass were fantastic (as well as all the beers.)

My kids like the Kvass as well, and it's fun to make.

Kvass

This is a great little book about the history, the health benefits and recipes for brewing your own Kvass. The author, Dan, gives clear instruction and insight on making this tasty drink. Kvass is a low alcohol drink, 1%-2%, so everyone can enjoy. The recipes vary from the tradition Kvass, which uses bread, to some that uses beets and herbs. So far I have just tried the bread recipes and they are good.

Kvass recipes, but no history

I bought this book for the historical information, and was disappointed to find that there's hardly any of that. The author knows the Nestorian Chronicle refers to kvass, and ... that's about it. He has very little knowledge of Russian history, and clearly has never been there. His knowledge of how kvass is brewed in Eastern Europe is, I would say, near-nonexistent. The writing is also poor.

There are some formatting issues in the Kindle edition, and while they make the book look unprofessional, they don't harm readability much.

The recipes look fine, and the instructions go through everything you need to know to make your own kvass. Be aware, however, that this is kvass as brewed by an American who's "reverse-engineered" the process. Europeans will make it differently. Also, if you are not from the US, note that the book uses imperial measures, so using any of the recipes will involve lots of annoying conversions.

Kvass is one of the world's biggest beer styles measured by consumption, and a drink fit for gods when well made. It really deserves a good book. This is not that book.

However, if you're just looking for some recipes to make an interesting low-alcohol drink at home, this is a very useful book. I'm still giving it two stars for the misleading description of the book. If it were marketed as a book of American kvass recipes I'd give it four stars.

good solid 4 star book

I really enjoyed this book. Shannon is strong and no stranger to hard work. She is the perfect frontier wife. Cinders is a real man. He works hard and is recovering from the recent loss of his wife and baby. He is a typical man and makes many mistakes by not knowing exactly what to say or how to say it. They deal with the harshness of post civil war Texas and grow steadily closer. I won't give away anything because I hate spoilers. I will say that, while I truly enjoyed getting to know these characters, there were two things that prevented me from awarding five stars. The ending is very abrupt and leaves a lack of resolution unexpected in a stand alone novel. There are also several editing issues that should be addressed. There are grammar issues as well as simple spelling or words choice errors (there vs their) that need to be resolved. I did enjoy the book but I feel strongly that the author might want to consider having it edited and possibly revise the ending to allow for full closure of all of the subplots.

Kathleen Ball does it again with this new genre--historical western romance

I am a big fan of Kathleen Ball’s writing—I believe I have read all of her books. Cinder’s Bride was a change up for her. It is a historical western romance novel set in post civil war Texas.
I will confess that at first I had a bit of difficulty relating to the shift in her writing, but there was a great deal about the book that I liked.
I found Shannon McMurphy’s character to be believable, and I could sympathize with her insecurities and understand where she came from. She had made the choice to risk travelling to an area that she knew nothing about, to become a wife to man she didn’t know, in hope of having a better life than she would have had before. That took guts. When she realized that the man who sent for her had not been honest about himself or his intentions, she refused to marry him. That took guts. To punish her for refusing him, he left his mark on her… one that she would see every time she looked in the mirror. He thought she would bow to him, but she didn’t.
Cinder was a kind man and in good conscience he could not leave Shannon at John Hardy’s mercy. Since it seemed the only answer, he married her and took her to his ranch. But he is a man who is dealing with his own demons, and they are reflected in how he communicates with Shannon.
Thank God for Cookie, who became Shannon’s staunch ally.
Life in those times was very different than today—I think the author did a good job of portraying how it was. And no matter what decade people live in they are still human beings and have all the emotions that come with being a person. Their culture and past experiences will affect how they react, but they still fear, love, hate, get angry, make mistakes (yes I realise that’s not an emotion), feel insecure, worry…and yes they have sex.
There were a few editing errors. But overall I like the book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical western romances.

As a fan of mail-order bride romances, I truly wanted to LOVE Kathleen Ball's newest book, Cinders' Bride. The cover is gorgeous, the book description captivating, and I thought the idea of a bride-to-be walking into a nightmare (instead of finding the "rancher" who sent for her to be wonderful) an interesting read. Instead, I found a novel with many redeeming qualities but an even greater portion of significant disappointments.

REASONS WHY (for me) IT RATES BETWEEN A 2 AND 3 STARS (2 = "I don't like it" and 3 = "It's okay"):
* Poorly edited. Misspellings, misused words (out instead of our, naseas instead of nauseous, too when to is correct, and many more)
* Inconsistencies: the spring had been warmer than usual, but not a half-dozen pages later, the spring had been fairly cool, the animal found down was a cow (= female) then a steer (=male) then a cow (= female) again.
* Our hero, Cinders, vacillates between a good guy (per book description, saves her from the villain, treats her kindly) and his own thoughts condemning him. The first scene in his head I wanted to smack him. His reasons for flashing hot and cold and hot and cold toward his wife made him seem self-centered, inconsiderate, and ultimately, he simply didn't explain himself adequately to the reader. Poor motivation made him a non-hero, in my opinion.
* I really did not like the scene where they first make love. I'm far from a prude and have zero objection to Cinders and Shannon making love "on the page" (rather than "between the scenes"). I didn't like the play-by-play, (in Shannon's head, if I remember correctly) presented without the emotional connection women expect, feel, and attach to sex. Her first sexual experience, and it's not even at home, in their own bed, and to make matters worse, we never see Cinders come to the realization he's ready to move forward, put his past behind him, and take a chance with his wife. He told her he'd do it as soon as he could do so without getting her pregnant, but that big stumbling block is never resolved. He just "takes her" (Shannon's word choice, not mine). I'm still cringing.
* So many story elements never conclude, are never explained, and we don't know that things are "going to be okay". Other reviewers have mentioned several (which I agree with), but one not yet mentioned is the townsfolk, including the storekeeper who helps Shannon overnight after the villain cuts her face, provides her a place to rest overnight and get her cheek stitched up. Everyone treats her like a fallen woman, no matter Cinders is well respected, and this story element goes nowhere. She never returns to town. We don' t know that they've decided she's okay, earned their respect, anything. It's just dropped. And yet the scenes where she's treated like refuse take up a significant portion of the early book. Misleading at best.
* Cinders and Shannon never even talk about his past, his deceased wife, his reasons for his hesitancy to remarry, his reasons for not wanting children. Shannon has to make assumptions about why he's the way he is (and I didn't like him through it all, and felt pity for her being stuck with a non-communicative man). She finally pieces things together. One of the best elements of romance novels is the communication and two people growing closer because they share their stories, fears, experiences, needs, plans, etc. None of this ever happened. In fact, the two of them hardly ever talked about anything (beyond the superficial) and when they did finally talk about things that mattered, the conversation was so brief it failed to meet my lowest threshold of expectations.

Bottom line, I'm simply *disappointed*.

In the late 9th Century, under King Alfred the Great of England, scholars compiled a history of the island from the invasion by Julius Caesar to 891. Great translation, great history

There are few works like this. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is perhaps the sole greatest written work to tell the history of England during the "Dark Ages." Bede's histories also compare nicely. But this work is brilliant, and covers everything from the ethnic identities of different people in England to the conversion of the various peoples to Christianity, from the wars with the Vikings to the supersititions of the time.

Like the Royal Frankish Annals, a comparable work from medieval France and Germany, this chronicle covers the history of a people year by year, telling the important events of each year. Anyone interested in Vikings, Anglo-Saxon England, or the Celts should study this text.

The translation also is solid, and so far, holds up to the best of my knowledge regarding the original manuscripts. Footnotes also help clarify points of vaguery.

Anglo Saxon Chronicles

This is a "just the facts, ma'am" book. It tells what happened, when, where, & to whom. There is some detail (more in later years), but mostly it's quite to-the-point. Still, it's a fascinating book. It is mostly updated to modern English, but I had to Google unfamiliar words & terms periodically. The book would have been a bit easier to read if a glossery of terms that don't translate well to modern English had been included. Otherwise, this book was well worth the money.
