An outstanding debut story collection, Z.Z. Packer's Drinking Coffee Elsewhere has attracted as much book-world buzz as a triple espresso. Yet, surprisingly, there are no gimmicks in these eight stories. Their combination of tenderness, humor, and apt, unexpected detail set them apart. In the title story (published in the New Yorker's summer 2000 Debut Fiction issue), a Yale freshman is sent to a psychotherapist who tries to get her--black, bright, motherless, possibly lesbian--to stop "pretending," when she is sure that "pretending" is what got her this far. "Speaking in Tongues" describes the adventures of an Alabama church girl of 14 who takes a bus to Atlanta to try to find the mother who gave her up. Looking around the Montgomery Greyhound station, she wonders if it has changed much since the Reverend King's days. She "tried to imagine where the 'Colored' and 'Whites Only' signs would have hung, then realized she didn't have to. All five blacks waited in one area, all three whites in another." Packer's prose is wielded like a kitchen knife, so familiar to her hand that she could use it with her eyes shut. This is a debut not to miss. --Regina Marler

The book form of this debut short story collection is getting the highest of accolades from the New York Times, Harper's, the New Yorker and most every other branch of the literary criticism tree. Likewise, the praise for the audio version of the book should be as lofty. Jordan, who, in addition to being a television and stage actor, works as an acting and dialogue coach, would be wise to use her superb performance here to advertise her business. Packer's stories deal with black men and women, mostly young and urban. Her carefully engineered narratives treat listeners to the richness of highly developed characters and lead them to some intriguing scenarios, like a troop of black Brownies spending their time at summer camp plotting against a troop of what they initially see as haughty white girls; and the deadbeat dad who talks his son into driving him across the country to the Million Man March, not to participate, but to sell parrots to African-Americans. As the reader, Jordan submerges herself completely into her characters, portraying Packer's superbly fleshed out cast with a dazzling versatility and an intuitive sense of delivery. Whether singing Brownie songs or making palpable a character's resounding disappointments, Jordan's delivery is as whip-smart as Packer's text is fiery and precise.

Adult/High School-The characters in these stories are mainly African American, but that is where their similarity ends. From the young Brownie troop member in the opening tale to the teen in the pre-civil rights South closing story, each one has a unique voice. The strong role of the church is evident, but the characters range from the very religious to the very doubtful. Sexuality is problematic-from the older virgin who is more interested in preaching the gospel to the 14-year-old virgin runaway who has also been preaching the gospel but can't help continuing a dalliance with a man she suspects may be a pimp and a drug dealer. The settings are Baltimore, Washington during the Million Man March, and, in a particularly bleak story, Japan. Each selection is strong, but "Brownies" may be the strongest. It's full of dark humor and unseen plot twists, reminiscent in tone of a Flannery O' Connor tale. All of the selections appeared previously in various literary magazines. Older teens will find much to enjoy in this collection. For those studying the short story as a literary format, it would make an excellent companion to more classic tales.

Amazing book. It's so exciting to hear the voice of a young author. It feels like she is telling you a story directly. She never gets bogged down in over-writing. She submerges you in a magical quality of direct experience (which is often harsh but never without forgiveness).

This book will forever remain among the favorites on my shelf - I just couldn't put it down! ZZ Packer is immensely talented, hilarious, and poignant at once, and her characters are vulnerable and truthful, caught in the turbulence of the world around them. These stories beg to be read (and reread and reread), honestly!

Packer has real talent

Packer creates believable, generally sympathetic narrators. She can also narrate in the third person. Her humor and ability to surprise make her a favorite with students at the college level. Students who didn't like many of the readings in a women's studies/women writers course liked this collection.

    Interesting but not for beginners

    This book covers many interesting and useful topics associated with Hbase. Especially good is schema design part. It is definitely worthy reading.

    However, one unfortunate feature of this author is that he always jumps ahead of himself. For example, he presents API code before explaining API. And the same pattern is observed throughout the book.

    Another problem is that API is explained poorly, that's why I would not recommend this book for beginners. Read it when you already understand some basics of Hbase.

    Excellent "How To" for Optical Designers

    In the acknowledgements the authors state they "wanted to create a book in the field of optical system design that was clear and easy to understand" - Mission accomplished!

    This book is indeed easy to understand but nevertheless provides detailed explanations of how to design an optical system. While not deeply mathematical there are sufficent formulaes provided (with examples) so you can understand what to do and how to do it. If you were puzzled as to why achromatic lenses are used you won't be after you read this book. The book also explains how distortion occurs and how to get rid of it. Also there are sections on mechanical components such as lens mounting etc. The book also explains how to use typical optical design software.

    My only (slight) dissapointment was the relatively few descriptions of typical systems - but using the book you could design these from first principles. Also to be fair there are so many designs out there that this is probabaly asking too much.

    I bought this book because as an electronics engineer I did not know enough about optical systems to be able to design one. Reading this book and downloading some freeware optical design software (and using the book to help understand the outputs) has solved that problem

    One of the best technical books I own

    Having studied the comments on four other books before holding my breath and purchasing "Optical System Design," I was still worried that it would turn out to be a physics-oriented treatment of the subject despite the comments.

    I was happily surprised.

    Not only is this book well- and often humorously-written (to me at least), it has memorable explanations which make applying the knowledge easier.

    In particular, the excellent treatment throughout the book on the six major third-order aberrations' causes has helped me use my optical design tools more correctly. I do not guess about specific changes, I know what to expect when making a change in the design.

    I have found over the years that purchasing two texts on a topic is a good strategy. One must be a "thick book," like "Optical System Design," and the other a "thin book" which serves as a map. I'm still looking for the "thin" compliment to OD, but its layout and index are good enough that I will probably not follow my normal pattern.

    Based on other reviews, you expect a highly polished product - full of glossy enlightening diagrams and explanations. The book is OK and conveys many important notions of optics adequately, especially if you have some background knowledge. However, at times, it feels like a potpourri, too wide to be under control and lacking in rigor. The authors present a few formulas at times and assure us that they could write many more "if they wanted to". However, this book really feels like the work of practitioners - a bit thin on the theory side. Many figures have a printing quality too low to be readable (so much for the Nyquist criteria, which by no coincidence is presented quite poorly) and the chapter on diffractive optics is a didactic catastrophe. Just because a book has been around for a long time and is respected in the field doesn't mean that it can't be improved upon. Still, I find myself reading the book time and again. The book will complement nicely Born and Wolf, which lies at the other extreme.

    About the Author

    A transmission engineer, Count Hans Christopher Seherr-Thoss had the inclination to write Universal Joints and Driveshafts in 1980, when he realized the need for an effective textbook on machine elements. But only in 1988 did he actually form the writing team and find the publisher Springer, which released the English-language first edition in 1992.�Count Seherr-Thoss, whose long writing career began more than 50 years earlier in newspapers, has authored works on technical subjects since 1948 and published his first Springer book, on gears, in 1965. He resides near Munich, Germany, and maintains an archive, founded in 1936 in Breslau, which specializes in technological, economical and related biographical works.

    Informative yet poorly elaborated

    First of all, I am mostly interested in innovative constant velocity shaft design, and I have developed my own way of thinking (geometrically) and computation (efficiently) over the years.

    From where I stand, the book is quite informative on traditional (rolling bodies and tracks design) CV joints: it contains all the important historical inventions you need to know...stress analysis and design take up half space...tons of data and facts about practical designs.

    However I find that the text is poorly elaborated. For example, many figures, which are key to understanding the whole idea of CV joints, are inconsistently drawn and poorly explained. One simply needs tons of time to figure out what the figures are all about from the equations (conceivably full of trigonometries), which is never a good idea in the first place. Although the book is only 300 pages, it may take twice the amount of time to finish than some smoothly written 700-800 pages (I know quite a few such books!). I doubt that anyone will adopt it as a textbook.

    Considering the book being written around 1988, the bulk of knowledge is rather old (if not obsolete), and pays little attention to innovative linkage based CV joints/driveshafts design. In fact, theory of linkage based CV joint is developed as early as 1973 (K.H. Hunt). In practice, many innovative designs are already seen in such CV joints as Koenigs and Thompson CV joint. It would be a good idea to consider analysis and design (in terms of both mechanics and kinematics) of such CV joints in modern CV joint textbooks.

He was Professor of Psychology at�DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and held several�positions there, including Chairperson of the Department of�Psychology, Faculty Development Coordinator, and Interim Dean�of Academic Affairs. He received his BA from the University of�Texas at Arlington and his MA and PhD from Baylor University.�He received further training in the Department of Physiology at�Baylor University College of Medicine and at the Aeromedical�Research Primate Laboratory, Holloman Air Force Base. Bob and�his wife, Duejean, live on a 3,200-acre ranch they share with 47�other families in the hills outside San Luis Obispo. Their two sons,�daughter-in-law, and three beautiful grandchildren all live nearby.

    Quite possible the worst textbook I've been assigned to read

    I will make this rather short and to the point. The organization of the materials reads more like a narrative than a textbook. The reader is forced to make sense of the writer's complete lack of structure and categorizing. There were numerous typos and as well as sentences in which all of the words contained no spacing between them. This was a rather difficult course, and the author/publisher failed to assist in any way.

    Good psych book

    Very detailed, and rarely boring. The only problem from my perspective is that it was too detailed sometimes, and the course I was taking was not as in-depth. Other than that, excellent.

    Enjoyable and Engaging

    I found this to be an interesting, engaging, well-arranged text book. It took a complex subject which easily could be confusing and laid it out in a nice, easy manner. The course felt easy for me because this book was so efficiently designed that learning was almost effortless. This is an achievement in any subject, but is particularly appreciated in a subject like psychology, where many texts have multiple theories for many phenomena confusingly splotched together on a page without strong overarching narrative. Exceeded my expectations, reading assignments in the book were never a drag, no gristle just lean knowledge injection straight into your brain.
