About the Author

Kevin Tatroe has been a Macintosh and Unix programmer for ten years. He is an experienced PHP developer, knowledgeable in the changes coming with PHP 5. He is also co-author of the first edition of Programming PHP.

Peter MacIntyre lives and works in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. He has over 16 years of experience in the information technology industry, primarily in the area of software development.Peter's technical skill set includes several client/server tools and relational database systems such as PHP, PowerBuilder, Visual Basic, Active Server Pages, and CA-Visual Objects.Peter is certified by ZEND Corporation on PHP 4.x and has contributed writing material for Using Visual Objects (Que Corp.), Using PowerBuilder 5 (Que Corp.), ASP.NET Bible (Wiley Pub.), and Web Warrior Survey on Web Development Languages (Course Technology).Peter is also currently a contributing editor and author to the on-line and in-print magazine called php|architect (www.phparch.com). He has also spoken several times at North American and International computer conferences including CA-World in New Orleans, USA; CA-TechniCon in Cologne, Germany; and CA-Expo in Melbourne, Australia.

Solid PHP Guide

While not an important part of the book itself-the foreword was one of the best I have read in a technical book. It really describes how many people get started with PHP-it is accessible. This book provides a lot more structure than randomly placing PHP statements that have been googled together. I have not had the chance to review other editions, but it was noted that the material had been updated for the latest features of PHP version 5. With over 500+ pages, this feels like the O'Reilly books from the past that covered a lot of material and feels like a solid reference all around. One example was learning about Traits. While I knew of them from other languages, I had no clue that they were part of PHP until this book since I am only a causal user of the language. Chapter 7 dealing with Web Techniques will probably be immediately useful for someone trying to get a site out quickly. SQLite and MongoDB coverage was welcomed and showed that current updates are indeed included. While of course not complete by any means in scope, Chapter 12 Security was a great introduction to the various security concerns developers need to think about including XSS, filtering input, and session fixation to name a few. One minor complaint was the debugging chapter was very short and did not seem to add that much value to me. I would have liked to see the chapter about extending PHP with C from the 2nd edition, but that subject probably had a limited audience and I understand why it was likely removed.

Overall conclusion: Solid reference and learning guide for PHP. I don't think you could go wrong with "Programming PHP".

Well written for a programming text

I have a bad habit of buying programming books on a whim. That being said, this turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

* The examples are immediately useful. I've already been able to code minor things for work and home in the past 3 days; I've barely used PHP seriously in 10 years.
* Its modern. A lot of books tend to be obsolete by the time they come to print. This book has updated stuff for MySQL + NoSQL; object-oriented behavior; graphics; PDFs; etc. I expect to get much use out of it on some upcoming projects.

More of a reference than an introduction

I wouldn't recommend this book to people with no scripting/programming experience as it dives right in. It feels more like a reference book. The subject matter is more about the language itself rather than using examples on how to use php. It's a decent book for someone who knows how to program and needs a reference on PHP, but if I was a complete novice I'd feel overwhelmed as it assumes previous knowledge/experience in programming fundamentals.

Not as readable and interactive as I expected

I am a school counselor and I was looking for a workbook with activities to help work on students' confidence and self esteem. I guess I misunderstood what this book was- It's written in a kind of textbook format. It has stories and anecdotes to make it more readable, and the concepts are explained really well. As an adult, I found it helpful! But I can't imagine sitting with an 8-13 yr. old and getting through a book that is long and at points can be a bit of a tedious read. Perhaps if it was done only a bit at a time it might work.. Overall, if what you're looking for is a thorough analysis and explanation of confidence and self esteem for kids, this book does a good job of that.

Easy Reading -- Covers Extremely Important Topics for Kids

I wish this book was around when I was a kid. In a conversational manner, this author communicates specific tools that kids can use to feel better about themselves and about how they relate to others. There are also examples of how kids have already addressed issues of confidence and self-esteem. It is a book that parents and kids may even want to read together to discuss the key points.

Wonderful book for both kids and adults!

This book gives concrete ways that kids can begin to feel better about themselves. The vocabulary and writing style captivate young people (it's for ages 8-13). The graphics are beautifully done too. While this book is great to help kids, it can actually make adults think about their own confidence level and ways to improve it. A must buy!

Delivered Kindle edition not what was ordered

Bought digital version of 5th edition in May 2015. Edition delivered to my Kindle for iPad is labeled "5th Edition" but is actually the text of the 4th edition from 1999. Amazon's kindle online preview shows the proper 5th edition from 2007. The book itself is excellent but I'm disappointed by Amazon's substitution of an out-of-date edition.
Updated March 10, 2016: Amazon kindly issued a refund when the problem was brought to their attention. Great customer service!

Excellent overview

I am an investment analyst and used this book to get up to speed on an unfamiliar industry. I found it to be clear, well organized, and containing all the info I needed to understand the dynamics driving the business and the lingo. There was more engineering and scientific info than I needed for my purposes, but it was useful to thumb through those chapters to get a high level understanding of the issues. Highly recommended for people new to the industry.

Okay. So you've read The Primal Diet, and you have learned that there is a recipe book. That's great! But, there's just one little problem; how to get the ingredients. I don't know about the rest of you, but I live in a state that licenses raw dairies, but not to sell in stores or even at outdoor produce markets. I have no idea what these licenses are for. Many states don't license dairies at all. No doubt, unless you live on a farm, there will be problems getting raw milk, raw butter, raw cream, raw cheese and meat from grass fed cattle to varying degrees depending on your location. But, not to worry; there is a way. Buying clubs are springing up like mushrooms all over the country. That's one of the things I learned about when I started looking into raw food diets. Many people are determined, in spite of the interference of government, to get real living food for themselves and their families. These clubs are composed of everyday citizens just like you and me who want the kind of food they know will keep their families healthy. In fact, there are so many that it's going to be hard for the government to convince the general population that the desire for natural food is just a fad promulgated by a few wild-eyed fanatics. The author's point is that raw meat and dairy are far safer than the government would have us believe. And raw dairy products taste better by far.

The Recipe for Living Without Disease is well worth buying if you are serious about going raw, and even if you are not. It educates about the digestive system, and tells how to eat your food depending on what diet you are on, whether it's raw, cooked, or part raw, part cooked. There is a wealth of information about how the human digestive system works and what foods work best within it. The author talks about how we wage war on our bodies instead of working with them to keep ourselves healthy. Some people probably won't like this book because it brings home the fact that our bodies belong to the animal world whether we like it or not, and they have to be taken care of like the animals they are, no matter how spiritual we are or we think we are. He explains the role of bacteria and parasites in a way that I am sure you have never heard before, but this is information you need to see, even if only as food for thought. If you think long enough, you might realize that what he says makes sense. More than a recipe book, this is a book for serious study.

Reading this book has both dismayed me and given me hope. I am dismayed by the deliberate attempts of the government to protect the purveyors of dead food at all costs and to remove all opportunities to obtain the living foods that our bodies need unless they are covered with chemical sprays and/or genetically modified while at the same time telling us we are not doing enough to stay healthy. It's amazing to me that we are as healthy as we are considering the obstacles they have put in our way.

Have you ever smelled some of the baby formulas available today? I remember that long ago they used to smell like vitamins, but I recently came across one that smelled like moldy hay. The baby being given this formula was screaming his head off and drawing his legs up the way babies do when their stomachs hurt. Does someone actually believe that since babies can't talk they can put anything they want in these formulas and nobody will know the difference? Are the makers of these formulas getting the close scrutiny that sellers of raw dairy products get? If so, they need to explain what nutritious item in these formulas happens to smell like moldy hay.

I have hope for the future when I see the strong community spirit among the buying club members and the way everyone works together and tries to be of help and service to their fellow members. I find this very heartening and uplifting in a world where the American People have been dissed and denigrated in every way possible. The Media paints us as the dumbest and most immoral people in the world, but when you get down to the grass roots, that's not what you see at all. What you see are smart people, thinking people, caring people who want healthy and happy families and who will buckle down and do the work that's needed to make that happen in spite of the obstacles being put in their way.

Truth for those who are looking for it.

This information spun my head around at first because it was the opposite of what I'd been taught, although his diet recommendations are congruent with cultures that harvest and prepare their own foods. If you trust information that only comes from a doctor, and food that comes in a container, than this is not the book for you. If you are interested in information that gets measurable, irrefutable results, than this book is worth experimenting with in your own life. What Aajonus teaches, he learned from recovering from 3 terminal cancers himself over 30 years ago, and replicated in thousands of cases over the decades. Success is its own review.

The ideas were so radical,though, that I sat with the book for a month before trying it because I wasn't sure I could really do it. Then I did and I have never felt better in my life and I'm just 3 weeks into it. Even doing just parts of the diet will begin to bring energy and clarity back to you because where does life force come from? From food that has life.

I recommend buying both books, this plus "We Want to Live." It's important to educate yourself with both volumes - this one has recipes, the other has information plus protocols to follow with different symptoms of disease. Do your own experiment - find out what can happen when you let food be your medicine. Your health is in your hands.

This author offers a clear and concise tool that enables all of us to begin now to challenge our programming. We can stop believing that disease of any kind (mental, physical, social, political) is a mystery. We can replace our fear of the natural world with a love and understanding of our symbiosis with it.....even and ESPECIALLY with virus, fungus, cancer, and bacteria and everything else that has been targeted as "the germ." Discover Yourself

I read a great deal. This book is a MASTERPIECE! If I was stranded on an island, it would be the one I would want.
I cannot say enough about it other than get it! It will make a world of difference in your life and help you to understand yourself.
If you are tired of living in conflict with yourself, this book has your name on it! Paul Brunton writes with brilliance and he has become one of my favorite authors.

Reality?

The book `Discover Yourself' is an elaboration of the previous truths that the author has presented to us. He starts of by explaining God and the beginning of religion. Further on, he gives new light to the prayer `Our Father' that Jesus taught. He also provides wonderful insights to the Sermon on the Mount, by Jesus. He calls them `The Seven Beatitudes' which I think is aptly named.
He again touches on the subject of Yoga and meditation and how to attain it. This is explained extremely well in his two earlier books `The Secret Path' and `The Quest of the Overself'. The author also compares the differences between monks & hermits who flee the world into forests and monasteries versus those who try to find God while facing the material world. Not only is the latter method preferable and realistic, it also builds for stronger self-control and self-discipline.
Three chapters are devoted to the `Bhagavad-Gita', the Hindus gospel. I find his explanations of the Gita to be very much in line with the teachings of Jesus. Interestingly, the author also warns about the attainment of spiritual powers like healing and performing miracles, which are manifestations of a lower plane. I was initially shocked, since that has been my aspiration. I realize differently now.
The final chapters discuss `The Gospel according to St. John' which is very enlightening. In `The Mystery of Jesus' chapter, I find some conflict with the `The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ' by Levi.
In conclusion, another great book by Brunton.
