Thirty-three year old Mark Sheridan lives in San Francisco. His life revolves around his job selling advertising… and the time he spends at the gym with his best friend, Dave. The only real problem in his life is his next-door neighbor who parties every night, making sleep very difficult for Mark. Things change for Mark drastically when his noisy neighbor is found dead and a new girl, Sylvia Martin, moves in.
…Now with his neighbor gone, the girl of his dreams has moved in. Sylvia is a strange girl with a lot of secrets, secrets she is unwilling to reveal to Mark. His friend Dave and Dave's fianc�, Gail, both are taken aback by Sylvia's eyes… She also wears a satanic symbol around her neck, which troubles them as well. Unfortunately for Mark, all he can see is a gorgeous girl that he wants to be around all the time.
The fact that Sylvia doesn't like to go out during the day doesn't seem to faze him; her story about an allergy to light makes sense to him. Sylvia comes to Mark's apartment every night, but in spite of her flirting and kissing, she (initially) refuses to have sex with him. Mark takes that as her desire to go slow—little does he know!
Sylvia is a vampire and for some reason, she wants Mark. She even painted a portrait of the two of them together years ago. Has she dreamed about Mark as he dreamed about her? Even when Dave and Gail get married and a priest, Father Callen, advises Mark that Sylvia is a vampire, he refuses to leave her… Does Sylvia want to turn Mark? Will Mark let her if she wants to? Is he willing to turn his best friend away for a girl he has only known a few weeks?
This was an interesting take on vampires and it is told in the first person by Mark. Sylvia also has some very strange sexual desires and they are revealed in detail in this book. I enjoyed the story, it was an easy read, and Mark and Sylvia were interesting characters.

Mark Sheridan’s life is taking a strange turn; three curiously related murders had taken place within twenty-four hours of each other, and both murder scenes had happened within close proximity to him. The strangeness only intensifies with the arrival of Sylvia Martin from London, a mysterious pretty girl with weird eyes. She moved in after Mark’s loud and obnoxious neighbor was murdered in his apartment one night. Enchanted by her, Mark could not help but feel truly infatuated with her, ignoring his friends’ advice to be cautious, including a priest’s ominous warning about Sylvia. The Vampire Girl Next Door is a fast-paced, immersive supernatural fiction by Richard Arbib.
Narrated from a first person point-of-view, readers could tell right away that protagonist Mark is an average guy with a busy life schedule – gym, Kung Fu and film classes as well as working thirty hours per week selling advertising for a weekly newspaper. Readers don’t have to wait long for the eerie supernatural scenes to start. Right at the start of the novel Richard Arbib introduces Sylvia, whom Mark’s friend Dave caught staring at him from outside the gym’s window. As he walked home, Mark was attacked by three young thugs but he was saved by someone or something that swiftly killed two of them without being seen. We could already guess who his ‘savior’ was.
Overall, the story’s pace is definitely a fast one, and yet it does not feel rushed at all. The plot is adroitly written and I myself feel drawn to the mysterious Sylvia. This is perhaps the best supernatural fiction that I have read this year.

Mark Sheridan’s new next-door neighbor is beautiful and mysterious, and he’s sure that her face is one he’s seen in his dreams.
Some odd things about her stand out — her unusual eyes, her strange sleeping habits, even her jewelry all make her unique to Mark, who quickly labels her his soul mate, even at the risk of alienating himself from his best friend.
The beautiful and intriguing Sylvia soon comes to dominate Mark’s life, teasing him with sex, her unexplained past and seemingly bottomless supply of money, and her in-your-face lifestyle.
By the time Sylvia spills her story, starting with her birth in the mid-17th century and ending with a search that brought her to Mark’s San Francisco neighborhood in the current era, it’s too late for Mark to retreat, either emotionally or physically, from Sylvia’s allure.

For the past decade, the genre of supernatural romance has permeated all forms of media, from “True Blood” on television, to the “Twilight” series on bookshelves and the silver screen. These stories feature a female main character that falls hopelessly in love with vampires, werewolves and other supernatural creatures.
Local author and TMCC professor Richard Arbib has taken this formula and flipped it on its head with his new novel, “The Vampire Girl Next Door.” The story follows Mark Sheridan, a San Francisco thirty-something with a penchant for working out and James Bond films. As people begin dying near him, he starts to suspect foul play. But these worries vanish from his mind the minute he meets his new neighbor, Sylvia Martin, a cultured Englishwoman with a sophisticated taste for her apparent age and an inexplicable love for golden showers. The two fall in love immediately, and what follows is a cavalcade of awkward confrontations, sexually tense outings and much more than Sheridan could have (or would have) hoped for.
“The Vampire Girl Next Door” has a type of role reversal, placing the man in the victim role with a very sexual female making the advancements. Mark Sheridan is no twerp either. The novel begins with a back alley brawl more reminiscent of “Bloodsport” than “Interview with the Vampire.” Nevertheless, Mark is powerless to the irresistible Sylvia.
Arbib creates a fairly realistic protagonist, forming a man that is likable, tough, and cool, while adding a certain vulnerability to Sheridan… Just as “Entourage” is the guy version of “Sex and the City” and professional wrestling is the man’s soap opera, Arbib has made a guy-oriented “Twilight” fully equipped with a dirty sense of dark humor…

Getting to know a Vampire

I've read a few Vampire books and seen a few Vampire movies and TV shows, but I've never been introduced to a more believable Vampire than the one created by Richard Arbib. I had a bit of trouble identifying with the protagonist, but his character development was good, and the story was well crafted and enjoyable to read. Definitely worth getting a copy.

Neo-Vampire--a must read

Mark's community is suddenly invaded by strange deaths. Distraught his neighbor becomes a victim is soon forgotten. He is fascinated by his new neighbor. She has been a phanthom of beauty and love in his dreams. Unlike other books you have read and put down, you will never forget her name--Sylvia. Mark is drawn to her beauty and unusual view of the world. And he allows her to mystify him in ways, mentally and physically till she is ready to let him know she's THE VAMPIRE GIRL NEXT DOOR. Arbib takes you on a ride, twisting humanity, sexuality, witchcraft and vampirism that will not be easily forgotten. Intriguing read. I'm ready for more.

The Vampire Girl Next Door...

In looking for different material to read, I stumbled onto this book online (Amazon, of course) and ordered it June 15, 2012. As I had other books ahead of I just was able to get to it the week of October 22nd. I echo the sentiment of others when I also say, this was different that any of the vampire books that I've ever read. It's a book that held my interest to the point that, when I didn't have the book in hand, the book had me wondering where the story was going to happen next!
The main characters:
Sylvia - a proud, beautiful, mysterious girl - with a body a man could sink his teeth into - but watch out! She bites!
Mark - he's dreamed of Sylvia for years - and his dreams come true - but they WILL COST HIM! As the saying goes..."It's just too good to be true!" (Boy, I'll say!)
Although Sylvia is at best reluctant to share her secrets with Mark (for good reason), she's drawn to Mark - and, of course, Mark is instantly attracted to Sylvia. But, this relationship is very costly to Mark...will he...pay the price?
Read on and see!
Arbib's style is straight-forward and somewhat terse for the majority of the book. His timing and descriptive style works for me (I actually laughed out loud at parts). In the end, I didn't know I was getting setup for a sequel (I hope that Arbib's at work on it - I'll buy it when it goes on sale).
I rate "The Vampire Girl Next Door"...Five stars!
P.S. This really is a slightly different vampire story for you to consider!
P.P.S. Then there's the matter of that...uh, "golden shower" that gets discussed...Ewwww! But then again, whatever "floats Sylvia's boat!" (Insistent, isn't she?)
Overall, I liked this book - and recommend it
