He received a BA in Asian Studies from San Diego State University and an MA in Southeast Asian Studies from the University of Hawaii. Very interesting story in a historical setting of a "globalized" environment of the 17th century

It was a pleasure to discover a world in 17th century Southeast Asia where an ambitious explorer, Constantine Phaulkon (Gerakis), travels all the way to Siam (now Thailand) to become trusted enough by King Narai to eventually rise to become his Foreign Minister of Trade! The world was truly an "oyster" for a young man from the Greek island of Argostoli. Without passing judgement on the result of his adventures, I marvel at how fluid international relations were during this period of history. I recommend this book to anyone interested in taking a glimpse into the Royal Siam court during the 17th century where dignitaries and traders from as far as France, Portugal, Japan and Greece interacted on so many levels.

A really written tale that makes Thai history come alive. Even as a Thai person, I had never heard of Phaulkon and it is amazing to see what influence one foreigner had on my country. I hope there is a sequel.

Fascinating historical detail

A really fascinating corner of the history of East-West interdependence that we now take so for granted. Strach the master historian often steps ahead of Strach the storyteller, but the personal tone of the American characters' story pushes the plot along. The contemporary story of the two truthseekers and the historical tale of Phaulkon's hubris and destruction dovetail into a surprising finale that will speak to world-travelers, and to those who still feel like they haven't found their real home.

Just pictures

I gave this book 3 stars because the pictures are nice.
I'm not sure why the author has "for kids" in the title because there is nothing to help kids to appreciate the artwork. I think it is important for kids to look at famous paintings. There was no background information and no explanation of the painting or the author.
This is the title then the picture. There are 20 pictures.

This book contains 20 Van Gogh paintings, one per page. There is no analysis of them and, while they can be zoomed, the resolution is poor so you still can't see any details. Not sure why it is "for Kids" except that adults would be more discriminating?

You will find just pictures and no explanations. And rather strange choice of pictures, dark, a bit depressive and none of the most famous pictures. More suitable for kids would be Van Gogh's bright pictures full of sun, flowers and colors and masterpieces that are now common points in the world's heritage.

Love this series.

By far, Unstoppable, book # 4 in the Forehead Kisses series has been my favorite.

The story centers on Scotty and Livia. Both are very layered characters. Scotty is a history major who wants to be a fighter. Livia is a painter who is very analytical. They have sworn off relationships until they meet one another. Together they are very sweet. Both are broken souls who need to learn how to trust.

Scotty is just the sweetest guy. I thought he was good from the first books in this series and how supportive he was with his cousin, Keira. But with Livia it's what he was, times ten. Scotty may look tough on the outside but his soul is pure good.

Livia seems to have had something very traumatic happen to her so she is closed off. Im guessing that in Book #5 we will get to learn in detail what that is. And see how she and Scotty finally learn to love and trust one another completely because they didnt end on the highest of notes in this book and that makes my heart ache because they are soooo amazing together.

Besides, Scotty and Livia, this book introduces us to Ash, Livia's brother, who will be the focus of the last two books in this series. I think there is more to him than a pretty boy rich guy who likes to sleep around. I think there is a very good heart underneath it all because he is a very good brother to Livia.

About the Author
Noriyuki Inoue is Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of San Diego, where he teaches educational psychology, cognition and learning, human development, and research method courses. He is actively involved in advancing scholarship in the area of cross-culturally oriented research incorporating East Asian cultural concepts and epistemology for improving educational practices. Originally from Japan, he taught at Japanese schools until he came to the United States in 1991 as a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship. He received his M.Ed. from Harvard University and his Ph.D. from Columbia University.

Inoue wants to undo the traditional relationship between theory and practice - one in which the practitioner is a consumer of educational theory - and have educators develop their own personal theories. For example, Inoue explains how behaviorist psychology focused on external behaviors, and continues to exert an influence on education: the current obsession with observable and measurable outcomes in assessment and evaluation disregards whatever internal, psychological processes might be taking place in the learner. As teachers know, "education deals with many things that are invisible" (p. 28), and a focus on observable behaviors gives an impoverished view of what our students are learning. On the other hand, in his commentary on cognitive learning theory, Inoue criticizes the reductionism in cognition-based research that strips away the context and complexity of real learning situations: "we need to construct a more humane model of the way students learn in schools" (p. 49).

For a small book, Inoue covers a lot of ground, and educators who have an appetite for some of the key concepts and figures in educational theory will be treated to a little neuroscience, a smattering of consciousness, a small helping of constructivism, a bit of motivation, and modest servings of Freud, Vygotsky, and Piaget. Inoue writes in a voice that is refreshingly straightforward and wise. The East Asian concepts - mostly Japanese - such as jikkan (gut feeling), kizuki (the process of arriving at an "aha!" moment), and omoi (a concept that embraces thinking, feeling, and passion), are an interesting introduction to different ways of thinking about teaching practice, though I'm not sure how much they will 'take' given their very brief treatment. Still, as a polite debunking of established educational theory, one that encourages the reader to take what's useful but leave the rest in the process of arriving at a personal theory, this book is a really great read.

China has changed so much and so dramatically over the past century, and indeed over the past twenty years, and these changes are reflected in the language. Textbooks written only twenty years ago are now quite quant. Much information on the actual use of putonghua (Mandarin Chinese), the use of dialects or various romanization systems is now out of date. The aim of this book is to present current realities. China is a country with a long history, and to understand modern China we must know something of its past. The same applies to the language. Earlier stages of Chinese still have a deep influences on the current language, and we should at least be aware of such influences.

This book is not a language textbook for those wishing to learn Chinese. It does not try to teach the Chinese language. It is a book about Chinese. It has been written for people who are thinking of taking up Chinese and would like some insights into what they are letting themselves in for. As the Chinese strategist Sunzi said, "zhi ji zhi bi, bai zhan bai sheng."—"Know yourself and know the other: a hundred battles, a hundred victories." The same applies to learning Chinese.

I have studied Chinese for 17 years and have read many, many books on Chinese. This is not a classroom book for learning Chinese. But it is a wonderful adjunct. Beginners and advanced students alike would find it of interest, as would any linguistically oriented person wanting an introduction to this remarkable language.

Really excellent depth for reference

For most enthusiasts of the Chinese language, this recently published book is a must-have. The scope and depth of coverage are perfect for light browsing and careful reading, by those who don't know "Ni hau ma?" to those who have studied in school. Very many important specifics are nicely summarized and presented in an order that makes sense. For anyone who wants to master the language, this book will inevitably be helpful. It even briefly lists all the complicated basics of referring to family relatives!

it's pretty good, but not exactly true to the title

It is a good light book for the general reader. It even has lots of tips for studying Chinese, like how to memorize Chinese characters, and what reference books to get at what level. It is relatively up-to-date, with some very nice new words and new usage. I think it should benefit beginners and intermediate students who need some pointers and directions. Also the part about the methodolgy of simplifying characters is very informative too.

The only thing that I am a little disappointed with is the historical sketch of the development of Chinese. As its tile suggests, it should be a book that contains at least a decent amount of history of the language. You see that in the subtitle, it says "its history and current usage". But actually there isn't much history in it. The author only gives a few paragraphs to each period in the history of the lanugage, introducing a few key characteristics in each period. Admittedly, history of the Chinese language is a "notoriously" difficuly subject that calls for extensive knowledge of linguistics and Classical Chinese on the reader's side . The author probably does not want to scare away the general-interest readers by talking about the nitty-gritty of historical reconstruction. But a more systematic description that strips away the technicality would be better.

BORIS F.J. COLLARDI is Chief Executive Officer of Julius Baer Group Ltd., the leading pure-play private banking group, based in Switzerland. He oversees all operational issues on both a national and international scale. Before joining Julius Baer in 2006, Collardi spent twelve years with Credit Suisse and contributed significantly to its successful build-up and the expansion of its private banking business in both Europe and Asia. During his years with Credit Suisse, he attained the positions of chief financial officer and head of the corporate centre within CS Private Banking. Collardi combines extensive leadership experience with proven expertise in the successful implementation of ambitious strategic projects. His international work experience stems from six years spent in Asia and the UK.
