He also takes us in the greenhouse and advises how best to cultivate lithops, from pollinating the plants to seed-raising, from light requirements to resting the plants. With the excellent photography of Chris Barnhill and others, the reader is then treated to a profusion of lithops mugshots. The photographs are mostly taken without flowers - to have included them would have hidden the plant in many cases - but a separate section shows many of these 'stones' richly in flower. Accompanying the photographs are descriptions, distributions and other notes for each species, including observations on any cultivars for that species.

Readable and Knowledgeable

Horticulture books tend to one of two approaches--either rich, dense and fact filled(and deplorably dry and dull) or engaging and approachable(while simplistic and insubstantial). The inimitable Steven Hammer has threaded the needle very nicely. The text reflects his considerable expertise in both the taxonomic and cultural aspects of the genus, and the text is suffused with a quirky and very readable erudition. In addition to the material on the various species--in approach, Hammer seems to fall midway between lumper and splitter--he has a nice section on some of the more interesting hybrid cultivars and sports that come available from time to time. I would consider this good company for D. Cole's and E. Storm's works on Lithops, although if anything the pictures are nicer than either. Well worth acquiring for even the semi-serious Mesemb enthusiast, and a most enjoyable read on the merits of the prose.

MUST HAVE FOR LITHOPS LOVERS

Absolutely the BEST book on lithops you can find. Believe me, I have ordered every other book on succulents and lithops available on Amazon. The entire book is very thin, more like a thick magazine, but the pages are full-colored.
This book is perfect for those who are just getting into collecting lithops or experienced collectors. The first half of the book talks about the history, regions where they grow (with maps), lithops anatomy, cultivation, and growth. The second half of the book is a catalog of Lithops species and their COLORED PHOTOGRAPHS. No more guessing your species from vague descriptions or from photos with no details!

Clear outline in growing Lithops

Conflicting statements online got me all confused on how to grow Lithops, this book clarified most doubts (eg, ideal size of pots, what kind of soil mixture) so far (at least to where I've read) some parts written in a very tongue in cheek way, which does make it all the more a fun read.

Some of these authorities can be in the moral and religious domains.

Why have people for thousands of years accepted epistemic authority in religious communities? A religious community's justification for authority is typically based on beliefs unique to that community. Unfortunately, that often means that from the community's perspective, its justifying claims are insulated from the outside; whereas from an outside perspective, epistemic authority in the community appears unjustified. But as Zagzebski's argument shows, an individual's acceptance of authority in her community can be justified by principles that outsiders accept, and the particular beliefs justified by that authority are not immune to external critiques.

Linda Trinkaus Zagzebski is Kingfisher College Chair of the Philosophy of Religion & Ethics and George Lynn Cross Research Professor at the University of Oklahoma. If you are new to India, don't go there without reading this book!

I can't imagine how I would have navigated (literally and socially) through my first and lengthy trip to India if I hadn't first read this book. India is an absolutely awesome country, But, for someone like me (from the U.S.) it is also much like being on a different planet. My journey through India from Delhi to Bangalore was the most exciting of my life. But, I have to attribute much of my "comfort" during that journey to having been as culturally prepared as possible before I got there by reading this book.

Fun to read, possibly may be exaggerated

I'm glad I read this book because I shared it with my fianc� who is from India. We plan to travel there soon. He said the babies peeing on the ground freely is not true. He never experienced seeing that. But it was good to know no kisses in public. Fun to draw our conversations and see what is true and not true.

Recommend with a the notion of taken with a grain of salt. Very exciting and fun read. I just have to go and see for myself what is true or exaggerated.

This is a journey of friendship, perseverance, and a deep respect and love of Japan. I thoroughly enjoyed the very personal recounting of their monumental trip. They give great tidbits of information on the land, culture, food, and various tips for your own journey. It's well worth the read, and you may soon find yourself packing a bike to make your own Japan by Bicycle experience.

Three men embark on an amazing adventure of a lifetime

Andrew, Dylan, and Scott did a great job blogging during their trip and compiling their entries together into this book. I would have done the same if I biked or hiked the entire length of Japan. I enjoyed looking at the pictures that they included. Although I wish they made some of them bigger, the pictures are a great supplement.

The trio bicycled through a total of 22 prefectures and visited many cities and towns, sometimes camping and other times couch-surfing. If you are thinking about traveling to Japan, you should definitely buy this book and read it.

Massive Fun

This trip was better documented than an Everest attempt. If you are interested in long bike trips, Japan, or 300 pages of light reading to pass the time on your next flight, this is worth it. There are plenty of cheesy puns and an occasional touch of tongue in cheek melodrama, but it doesn't seem like the Andrew is taking himself too seriously. The style fits the spirit of a fun fraternal adventure, not a dramatic survival story or a dry documentary piece. And as the other reviewers have said there are plenty of pictures so buy it for your illiterate friends!

The philosophy of philosophy

There have traditionally been two approaches to works that introduce this amorphorous "philosophy" thing to lay readers. The first is the "topical kind," providing explanations of the various questions and methods of philosophy and the second is the "historical kind" that introduces the main western philosophers and their ideas. Mr. Adler's book, while leaning to the former, is a clever admixture of the two systems. He provides a clear, though at times, as he admits, limited, critique of post-Rennaissance philosophy (indeed, he expounds on this critique elsewhere). However, what is the most valuable element of this work is the discourse on the nature of the philosophical pursuits which Mr. Adler provides. Indeed, in this book are planted the seeds of a "Structure of Philosophical Revolutions." To the ever-so-unanswerable question of what the point of philosophy itself is, Mr. Adler presents a passionate defense of his discipline in light of its criticisms from the rest of the world. Albeit Mr. Adler's view on the importance of Aristotle and the blatant errors of modern philosophers are anything but a settled matter amongst any students of philosophy, for anybody curious to get a fresh, no-nonsense and, best of all, readable insight into the nature of philosophical inquiry itself it is a work I highly recommend. To all other less-lofty readers I recommend it highly as well, though with four stars, as the reviewer disagrees with some of Mr. Adler's conclusions on the importance and correctness of Aristotle.

The right role and future of philosophy

Mortimer Adler was a somewhat prolific writer and popularizer of philosophy. In this book he attempts to raise philosophy's standing vis a vis science, the latter taking a pre-eminent role in people's minds as the only source of truth. Adler says that this is not so, that philosophy must be judged by other standards and that there are questions that science is incapable of answering. Adler details specifically how science and philosophy differ and where each can make a meaningful contribution to knowledge. He goes on to describe how historically philosophy lost it standing, primarily from key philosophical mistakes made by philosophers, beginning with Descartes. It is interesting to read how he takes on all of philosophy that developed from Descartes into the early twentieth century and wonder how a discipline could have gone so wrong (if indeed it had) for so long. The history of philosophy was not all negative, of course, with positive progress made at various times. Adler explains how philosophy has four dimensions - the metaphysical (first order questions about reality), the moral (questions that address how things ought to be, in morals and politics), the objective (questions about so-called second order topics),and the categorical, or what is usually referred to a "the philosophy of this or that", .e.g the philosophy of history.

Overall the book is interesting although challenging to read. Adler's style was not the smoothest. In fairness, he does a very good job of addressing difficult topics. The one rather disappointing chapter was the one that was basically a cut-and-paste of from the The Great Ideas - A Syntopicon - I (Angel To Love) (Vol. 2 of Great Books Of The Western World Collection), a book that was an outline index of sort of the so-called great ideas and their various sub-topics. He does end the book with a good summarizing final chapter, where one can absorb comfortably and confidently the points Adler made earlier.

I was surprised by Adler's espousal of socialism, although to give him the benefit of the doubt, I think he was thinking of some idealized version (although don't all ideologies begin and tantalize with idealistic visions?) Adler also was over-optimistic that philosophy would regain its stature. He, however, could not have anticipated the scientism that developed in parallel with science's increasing knowledge, particularly about the brain, in the last 20 years or so.

Definitely recommended, but this is one book that will require multiple readings for full understanding.

For VERY ADVANCED programmers, and assume you already know a LOT about trees, hash tables, arrays, matrices, etc. KARUMANCHI IS REFRESHINGLY DIFFERENT!

Nara does NOT assume you're a veteran programmer or a recent high level grad in the dream interview! He assumes you (maybe) know a little IT and a lot of Engineering or Math, for example, or that you're an older manager who is great at systems and strategy but rusty on coding. OR, maybe you're on the embedded or data science side and your programming is very deep (circuit/assembly) or broad (data mining) but not necessarilly OOP style algos and data structures.

There is no book quite like this, because, even though it is in a different category than the 4 biggies above, it should appeal to a much bigger audience, not only for a certain type of interview (a little or no direct coding but perhaps managing people who do?) but a vast range of newer job types. Example: "Data Scientist" is a brand new, warp speed growing occupation with starting salaries as high as 200K US, and some firms are even creating "CDSO" positions (Chief Data Science Officer).

The other thing Nara does, is give progressively more detailed and complex solutions to the same problems-- allowing you to go as shallow or deep as you'd like. From my field (math) an example would be: If you can code at interpreter level in Maple or Mathematica or GNU, it will compile and run, but not nearly as fast as if you know C++, algos, data structures and even a little assembly.

If the job description says you'll be tested with phony problems to actually code in the interview, the other big four above are the ticket, but if the position only needs you to UNDERSTAND algos and DS's, Karumanchi is awesome. It also is a great (good sized), up to date REFERENCE for all levels of IT from Data scientists to math, engineering, research, physics, chemistry, etc. Even "R" folks like me can learn a LOT. When I create tutorials, if the students want a specific language to supplement this, I have them review a specific, usually older and used text like Lafore (Data Structures and Algorithms in Java (2nd Edition)) or any other in Python, C++, R, etc. Highly recommended for that somewhat different, unique, but GREAT job-- go for it and good luck!

This book assumes you have some basic knowledge about computer science. Main objective of the book is not to provide you all the interview questions. Awesome book, by all standards!

I must confess that his book is one of the most awesome ones that anyone who is interested in data structures, algorithms, meta-heuristics, could come across. The book is good for someone looking out on an intermediate to advanced level stuff on aforesaid subject, and its has ample stuff for any newbie enthusiast too. While this book is an excellent one from the interview point of view, it would serve equally well to those who work, and those who love tackling teasers in their past time.

The subject is dealt in great detail and problem solving is the primary focus, which I truly loved. It saves you a lot of time to have all kinds of questions aggregated at one place of varying difficulty, rather than having to look for them on internet or elsewhere. The best part about the book is the organization and approach to problems. It is not merely a question and answer book, it instigates you to think about the problem, come up with something and the compare it against what is provided as a solution. The language is lucid and easy to understand and the typical approach towards any problem is to come up with a solution anyhow (say O(n^2)) and then going on improving the complexity to O(NlogN) and then finally to an O(N). All the examples are annotated with comments and their space/time complexities.The approach is more of a critical-thinking one, the book helps you build an aptitude towards attacking a problem. While most books give you only the best algorithm towards a problem (and you never get to learn about the bad ones, which is necessary too), this book slowly builds up from just a possible solution to the best possible one. For those who think Levitin, CLRS, Cracking the coding is do-able, try cracking the whole of this!!!!

Great for interviews ...

This book is very good. Has solutions ranging from easy to difficult. It also explains concepts very well. Of course, it is not a regular text book. So if you are new to the data structures, this isn't for you. If you have basic idea of data structures, this gives a good refresher and provides lots of questions so that you can improve your skills before the interview. Definitely a book to read to prepare for technical interviews

I like this book

I like this book. I'm learning a ton from it. The book covers everything we learn in cs courses from beginning till graduation. Explanations
are very clear, making this book a lot easier to understand than some of the other programming interview books. I would have given this book
5 stars except for the fact some of the codes in the book are not tested and don't work. It's usually easy to see the mistake made in the code that doesn't work and correct it. I suggest the author should test all the code in the book and publish them, say on github. Without some of the untested codes, this book would hand down be the best coding interview book of all. I definitely suggest you buy the book if you are in doubt. It will pay off a thousand times.
