In the late 9th Century, under King Alfred the Great of England, scholars compiled a history of the island from the invasion by Julius Caesar to 891. The narrative, drawn from many historical accounts, was known as the Anglo Saxon Chronicle. After Alfred's death, the Chronicles were continued, with some versions being updated yearly until 1154. Today, the Anglo Saxon Chronicles are the most important source for early English history. Among the events described in the Chronicles are the Roman withdrawal from England, the first Viking raids on the island, and the Battle of Hastings that led to Norman rule.

Great translation, great history

There are few works like this. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is perhaps the sole greatest written work to tell the history of England during the "Dark Ages." Bede's histories also compare nicely. But this work is brilliant, and covers everything from the ethnic identities of different people in England to the conversion of the various peoples to Christianity, from the wars with the Vikings to the supersititions of the time.
Like the Royal Frankish Annals, a comparable work from medieval France and Germany, this chronicle covers the history of a people year by year, telling the important events of each year. Anyone interested in Vikings, Anglo-Saxon England, or the Celts should study this text.
The translation also is solid, and so far, holds up to the best of my knowledge regarding the original manuscripts. Footnotes also help clarify points of vaguery.

Anglo Saxon Chronicles

This is a "just the facts, ma'am" book. It tells what happened, when, where, & to whom. There is some detail (more in later years), but mostly it's quite to-the-point. Still, it's a fascinating book. It is mostly updated to modern English, but I had to Google unfamiliar words & terms periodically. The book would have been a bit easier to read if a glossery of terms that don't translate well to modern English had been included. Otherwise, this book was well worth the money.
