About the Author
Lincoln Peirce has been drawing the Big Nate comic strip for more than 20 years. Born in Ames, Iowa, Peirce grew up in Durham, New Hampshire. As a kid, he began creating his own strips in the sixth grade. Peirce taught high school in New York City and has created several animated pilots for Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. He lives in Portland, Maine, with his family.

Big Nate Gets the Grade Review. (Very helpful)

I would recommend this book to anyone in range of 4th to 9th grade. The book description said that he got better grades than Gina and he did not. So only for that reason do I take away a star from my rating. It really shows what Nate thinks of school,girls,teachers,and homework. I really enjoyed this book and will probably get another one in the series. In the book Big Nate Gets the Grade you see how funny Nate is, see him get detention, trick the school secretary and more! I recommend this book to all who wish to laugh and follow a 6th grader through his journey in middle school.

This funny story will grab the reader's attention to find out what Nate is up to. School life with Nate and his pals entertains, is delightful, and enjoyable. The Big Nate Comic Strip is popular, and the author has contributed animated pilots for cartoon TV shows. Highly Recommended!

Awesome but...

Other people say "Sexy" is a bad word. Some people say it's the 'S' word. It's not a bad word. It means pretty. Although, you shouldn't say it all the time. It might be inappropriate for Preschooler's or People who don't know the meaning of the word. On the other big Nate reviews I've read, it says, "I read my class this book and it said 'Sexy' and that was totally inappropriate." It's not really. It's kinda like the word "Crap." It doesn't mean a bad thing. It means "Garbage." But with the "B" word, that's different. Its like calling people a butt, meanie face, bully, etc. That is a bad word and you shouldn't use it. So I recommend these books for people ages 9-100. Thank you and goodbye!

Peter Heehs is an independent scholar based in India. He has written or edited nine books and published more than fifty articles. His publications include The Lives of Sri Aurobindo (Columbia University Press, 2008), Indian Religions: A Historical Reader of Spiritual Expression and Experience (New York University Press, 2002), Nationalism, Terrorism, Communalism (Oxford University Press, 1998, reprinted 2000, 2005, 2006) and The Bomb in Bengal: The Rise of Revolutionary Terrorism in India 1900-1910 (Oxford University Press, 1993). His books have been translated into Russian, Dutch, French and Japanese.

Great Survey of Self-Making

It hard to imagine all the major philosophical/literary and religious figures the book addresses being treated within the 236 or so pages of it and come away with a coherent thesis. But Peter Heehs has managed to do just this. Whatever maybe lacking in depth in each individuals biography is certainly made up by the scope of the book, which because it so broad creates yet another type of historical depth concerning the subject all its own. Given the ambitious nature of the book, most every major Western philosophical, literary and religious figure are given treatment as well as many notable figures from the East. Although one may quibble over minor exclusions of some authors or perhaps the short treatment given others, one gathers it would have been a lifetimes work to try and include every possible person of worth for this survey of self but, what we are given in this book is more than a representative sample of the most relevant figures.

Anyone wanting a broad overview of the history of the self will not come away disappointed. In fact the book is a great resource for its subject matter and encyclopedic at that! The book is especially useful for anyone following up Michel Foucault's scholarship in Care of the Self in which he provides a short history on Hypomnemata and other inner technologies of self-fashinoning.

Although the evolution of how the self has been thought throughout history varies considerably one common thread that runs thru the book, is that this history of the self has only been made possible through the technology of writing. The author closes with a consideration of self in the internet age and the fact that after the self had been vanquished in post-structualist scholarship (the death of the self) it has been reborn or rather has morphed into new forms facilitated by the world wide web and the first person accounts that proliferate through blogs and the new media. For anyone wanting an excellent overview of the evolution of the Western self this is a great place to begin.

More important than you might realize.

This book was very good if you're interested in people's concept of "themselves." I read it with another person, less formally academic than I, and she too found it powerful. Good points: it's accurate philosophically; as evidence of people's "selfhoods," besides classic thinkers, it uses examples from the fine arts, fiction and non fiction literature. It reads like a mystery, traveling through history, of how peoples concept of themselves have evolved from primal "awakings" right up to this second decade of this 21st century. I won't spoil it by disclosing the ending, but I will say it does imply some strong conclusions at the end.

What's so important about the topic? Well many people want & do make wars, in order to defend what they consider themselves. People justify there one motivations based on their concept of themselves. Still others want to fit God, or some sort of profoundness, into the picture. In essence the book represents some practical consequences of the classic "mind-body" dilemma which for me had two meaningful incites.

one: The repeated underlying challenging question raised in the book is: does the current concept of people's notion of themselves represent a true reality or is it false. Of course, if our concept of ourselves is false then what actually are we? What are we supposed to be able to count on to define ourselves? It is challenging the reader to look at themselves that way.

two: When curtain turning points in history of peoples mindsets, in our evolution of our concept of ourselves, is exemplified and shown to be invalid and un-defendable, upon reflection, one can see the same "primitive" point of view still being maintained by some people today. In other words, what is shown and concluded to be false, say three, five or seven hundred years ago, is still being expounded on and lauded today in certain circles of society.

To me this is what the book is about. I found it a very important topic.

decent intro to sports betting

This introductory level book explains the various bets you can make, and does a good job explaining why most bettors lose in the long run, identifying countless fallacies relied on by losing bettors. The author also identifies various metrics that can be used to evaluate teams. Unfortunately this portion is not well organized and reads like a stream of consciousness. Still, there are a few good things to think about (which most winning better already consider). It would have been nice to see a method to put all these different ideas together into one opinion on a game.

I know nothing about the NFL, but last season I made a pretty decent profit betting on it by following the advice from Matt Rudnitsky's pieces at SportsGrid.

Now, that doesn't mean that you should sell all your belongings and go an stick all the money on whatever picks he comes up with this week. That kind of "easy money" or "sure fire winner" mentality is exactly what Matt demolishes in this book. Betting on sports (especially the NFL) is hard, but if you are a casual gambler and want to increase your chances of turning a profit then you should read this book and heed the advice.

The book focuses mostly on NFL but there is lots of good general advice on how to approach betting on any sport, as well as some satisfying ridicule of the inane analysis served up by most pundits and "experts.

If you want to improve your sports betting, especially if you have an interest in the NFL, this book is a must read.

Starts off with basics and then gets into more advanced tips that will give you an edge! Also, very clearly written, and is an easy read!

Flying Backwards follows the journey of a woman living a sheltered life in a small town. Stuck in a rut composed of a dead end relationship, a boring office job, and a family business she has little interest in, Eleanor Clark yearns for new experiences and adventures. Gathering all the courage she can muster she applies for a job as an international Flight Attendant. Jennifer W Smith's detailed description of the training Eleanor must go through is both intense and suspenseful. Throughout the book Ms. Smith takes Eleanor on an odyssey of self discovery as she fulfills her need to change her life. The colorful descriptions of the experiences Eleanor encounters as she explores european cities adds to the excitement of this truly captivating book. Things get really interesting (and spicy!) as Eleanor encounters romance and some tough choices. Flying Backwards is as thought-provoking as it is engaging as Eleanor struggles with the challenges of what it's like to figure out what one wants in life. Tough to put down, this book will thoroughly entertain you with Eleanor's adventures.

Lovable characters, great read!

I read this romance in less than a week, and I loved it. The main character Eleanor is a strong and determined lady who makes one decision, which changes her life completely with surprising twists and turns. The descriptions of the places she visits as a flight attendant are excellent, the characters believable, and the three men male love interests make it an enjoyable read. I will be checking out further books by Jennifer Smith.

Flying Backwards is a wonderful story about a woman taking charge of her life, taking changes. The characters are easy to relate to and the predicaments Eleanor gets into are fun to follow. Great, easy to read, feel good book!
This story is a sweet romantic adventure with lovely details of foreign cities. I highly recommend it!
