Great translation, not well printed

The translation in this libretto is very good, and accurately conveys the meaning of the text into English. It is nicely presented as English on one side with the same text in German on the other. Page breaks are used to maintain this page by page alignment throughout.

The standard of the printing though is a little substandard. Some lines are distorted and appear shorter and taller than the surrounding typeface. The text is still easy to read; it is just a little off-putting. It could just be my copy, the print run or the text in general, but it is something to bear in mind.

All in all, a very nice purchase for the price of $5.95.

Die Walkure Libretto

The translation works very well, but i cannot compare it to other translations since I purchased it specifically because my Die Walkure CD did not have a libretto inside. In terms of the physical book, there are some oddities, such as the font changes size on some lines of text, which is distracting but not bothersome. All the English is on the left hand pages and all the German is on the right hand pages, with text in two columns per page. The sections of text are pretty well lined up, with maybe a line or two getting mismatched just once in the entire libretto on a page turn. I am very happy with this book.

this text does stand out from the pack...

...in a number of ways. The chapter on stoichiometry is the first one I flip to when I'm evaluating a new text. This book does a better job of providing a conceptual foundation for the mole concept than any other book I've seen. It shows the rationale behind the concept by working a few simple problems with and without moles. The problem setups emphasize strategic thinking by asking students to identify the 'critical link' that connects given information with the problem's goal. The "Is the answer reasonable" checks given with each problem are more detailed and more helpful than in other texts; they help students develop a sense for what is and isn't reasonable in the answer, using alternative back-of-the-envelope solutions that often provide additional insight into the nature of the problem.
The chapter on atomic structure is the only one I've seen that uses the central idea of quantum mechanics (wave-particle duality) as its central theme. It elegantly uses the de Broglie relation to tie wave and particle behaviors together, in the process naturally explaining where quantum numbers come from and why changes in electron confinement in a reaction can lead to color changes.
The thermodynamics chapter is also quite innovative, discarding the idea of entropy as a measure of disorder and instead stressing its connection with the number of ways a state can be realized. A simple model of heat flow from a hot object to a cold object makes the connection between probability and process spontaneity clear.
The approach for explaining and predicting molecular shapes is much better than that used in other texts, where students end up memorizing a large table of molecular shapes. This text starts by showing how electron domains arrange themselves the central atom, and then visualizes how the molecular geometry changes as bonding domains are replaced with nonbonding domains, one at a time. Students see the underlying idea without getting lost in a mass of detail and special cases.
I also like the "Thinking it through" problems at the end of each chapter, that emphasize critical and strategic thinking rather than simply getting a numerical answer. Ebbing and Chang don't have this feature. The "Test of facts and concepts" are cumulative tests that students can use to synthesize material from several chapters; I haven't seen another text with this feature, either.

Ideal for the autodidact

More than 25 years ago I took general chemistry in college and then never had a need to use the skills and knowledge...until recently. Now having made a bet with a colleague that I could pass an Organic Chemistry course on the first attempt, I don't intend to lose. I determined that I needed to tune up my general knowledge of chemistry. I checked out several college level texts from local libraries, but found them either arcane and opaque, woefully outdated, or far too superficial. Then I found an earlier addition of [i]Chemistry: Matter and Its Changes[/i] and found it straightforward and remarkably clear and readable. So I took the risk and bought this edition.

I've had this text in my hands for two weeks now and am well into the third chapter. I try to work through 8-10 pages daily and then work through 10 or 15 of the problems in the back of the chapter. Brady and Senese write well and bring a high degree of clarity to the subject of chemistry, and while I am starting to recall, with surprising detail the Chemistry I learned in 1984, I am also learning much that I either missed or misunderstood back in college.

Of course having only read the first three chapters, and not being a professional chemist, I cannot be certain that I am learning all that a chemist needs to know, but having obtained degrees and a doctorate in other fields, I do feel that I know the difference between a well written text and a poor one and I have every confidence that by the time I work through [i]Chemistry: Matter and It's Changes[/i] I will have sufficient knowleged to meet the "instructor approval" pre-requisite and take and pass Organic Chem.

Some Quality Analysis

I just saw this book at the near by B&N today. Originally I thought it would be another book advertising unsound systems to club players, so I decided to check its quality. I mainly checked the chapter dealing with my rep (1.d4 Nc6 2.d5 Ne5 3.e4 e6 4.f4 recommended by Avrukh). To my surprise, the quality of the book is far better than I initially thought. For example, I learned that this move order is an inaccuracy, as 4...ed5! 5.fe5 Qh4 is a draw. Then I checked the right move order (1.d4 Nc6 2.d5 Ne5 3.f4 Ng6 4.e4 e6 5.de6 fe6 6.Nf3). Here the author has found a strong move (novelty?) 6...d5 instead of the common 6...Nc5. The author tried to prove that black already has equality here, and after some analysis I have to agree with him. So in the end I decide to abandon my initial line, and try other systems.
Although I did not have enough time to check the Nimzowitsch Defence, I believe that the analysis would be quite solid, as many lines has been checked by Houdini.
In summary, if you want are interested in playing these minor systems, you should consider this book.

Excellent Book!

I like this book a lot! The author is a very strong FM (around 2400) and plays the opening himself which usually is a sign the book will be good, and this one is no exception. Advocating 1.Nc6 he takes it very seriously yet not overly seriously which makes for enjoyable reading. The explanations are clear and well written. It's as if he's there reading your thoughts because he doesn't leave you wondering as he covers all bases in an objective and easy to follow book. Armed with personal experience, thematic games and computer assessment, Schuyler delivers a compelling argument why the Dark Knight System is a great weapon for anyone, especially the club player. I have to say this was one of the best opening books I have ever read.

d4 nc6 covering with good detail all the testing lines

this is it! finally a real nimzowitsch defense book that's daring and original yet sound. the unfortunate truth for the longest time has been that reliable material on the nimzowitsch defense has been rare and either bland or outdated. 1e4 and 2.nc3 has been tricky to deal with, 2.nf3 has been meet with 5 replies , all with significant concrete problems and no author has dared write with authority on 1.d4 nc6 with the exception o an amateurish book by pickard dubbed the bozo indian. this book effectively deals with all such problems.

the book begins by covering 1.d4 nc6 covering with good detail all the testing lines, as well the major sidelines for white. attempts like 2.bg5 and 2.nf3 are covered, and the author does a find job with this appetizer chapter.

chapter two introduces the dark knight system where black plays a type of flexible pirc/king's indian set up. covers the mikenas defense 2.c4 e5 which leads often to superior versions of the tango, since black can check with an opportune 3.bb4+ and with possibilities of an early f5. i agree with the author's explanation that the more common lines with ng6 face problems with an early h4, while i think black is still fine, the author's line give's black more choices.

chapter 3 covers the bozo-indian. my only complain here is that the lines with d5 and exe6 as opposed to fxe6 get little coverage when they seem like the safest lines, and indeed what i play. that aside, i must commend the author for not letting a line slip away. he even covers 6.h4 which for the longest i thought was the refutation of the fxe6 lines. i ever change or decide to add fxe6 this book has it all. some lines where white can trade d3 bishop for the g6 knight are not my cup of tea but at least black has a dynamic position. the author also did us a favor and explained with detail how to win the game after the f4 e5 f5? Qh4 trap which is actually tricky to figure out OTB. he also covers the amazing draw trap where after f4 e6!? fxe5 qh4+! with a draw by perpetual. i was surprised that the author didnt mention that the montevideo retreat with 2...nb8 can transpose back to some of the pirc like lines.

chapter 5 covers the e5 nimzowitsch and i have no objection with its treatment, although i prefer the d5 nimzowitsch. play nc6 by winewski is the book that covers this line which is unfortunate since the only two things i learned from that book are the 3. qxd5 lines in the d5 nimzowitsch and that after 2.f4 d5 3.e5 d5! line (and the author's line here is just as creative 3...g5!?). my only problem with the e5 nimzowitsch is that white can force a transposition to a scotch game, but the autor covers this as well.

chapter 5 is a blessing. for the first time, black finally has a reply 2.nf3 that is solid and respectable even by engine standards. black recommends 2.d6 3.nf6 and 4.g6. this move has the added advantage to allow black to play the other attempts at the nimzowitsch declined , like the miles system (nf6 bg4, e6) mestrovic system (Same but with e5) or even 3.e5 so while these lines arent too reliable if played religiously, especialy agaisnt preparation, the nimzo player can keep the opponents guessing with 2.d6. aside from this black enters a pirc like formation completely side-stepping the austrian attack.

chapter 6 solves the trick of 2.nc3 with the waiting 2. nf6!. i was suspect of this move at first because if black attempts to force to a transposition to the positions of chapter 5, white can dish out lines with an early f4 or even bg5 , but the author shows that after f4 e5! is completely fine for black despite the 5 replies possible and bg5 is harmless. the rest of the book is decent filler involving how to respond to 1.c4 2.nf3 and other white openings.

the few complains i have are simply a matter of preference and not analysis so this book is a definite 5 stars and highly recommended book for nimzowitsch fanatics out there. As a 2000+ rated USCF expert who specializes in nc6 ,i will recommend this book over winewski's (which i also reviewed) any day. don't let the fact the author is a "mere" FIDE master fool you, he wisely is up to date on how to effectively use an engine to access foreign territory.

very good, but too autobiographical

It's a very good book, but I felt there was too much autobiographical material. I also would have preferred more case specific information, such as why a particular killer is known to be this kind of person or that kind of person. Overall it's interesting and informative, but a little on the lighter side in terms of in-depth information.

Excellent book for beginners who have already started playing Crusader Kings II

The book narrates like a good AAR (without screen shoots) and describes the perils of a Duke (err, sorry, a Doux). In a humorous way, he is advised by the ghosts of former Doux who explain him (and the reader) what to do and why - an original way to educate the reader about the ideas behind his actions.

From time to time, I had to smile when he encounters events....in a battle, he suddenly loses his fear and for anyone who has played the game, it is obvious that he just experienced the event that gives the character the "Brave"-trait during a battle.

So, the target audience are (obviously) players of Crusader Kings II.

If somebody has just purchased CKII and wonders how to start the first game, he/she is probably better off going to youtube and to search for "Let's play crusader kings 2".

But for someone who just went through the first game (starting as an Irishman and founding the Kingdom of Ireland), the book is perfect.
Let us be honest: At that stage, a player is likely to simplify things.
For example, regarding the spymaster, I only made sure
- that the courtier with the highest intrigue value is spymaster
- that the spymaster is scheming in the home province to uncover plots at the court.

If you are at that point - having mastered to form Ireland and looking what is beyond this rather simple scenario - the book offers wonderful insights.
Furthermore, a player who has gone through this first game should be able to appreciate the wonderful ways how the author puts game events into this narration.

I am not sure if advanced players will appreciate the book - maybe such a reader would be bored by the advice from the ghosts. Or entertained. Or still find the one or other helpful information.

Anyway, for me, it was $3 in exchange for a few hours of nice entertainment and some interesting ideas how to play more complex games (starting as a vassal).

About the Author

Kevin Tatroe has been a Macintosh and Unix programmer for ten years. He is an experienced PHP developer, knowledgeable in the changes coming with PHP 5. He is also co-author of the first edition of Programming PHP.

Peter MacIntyre lives and works in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. He has over 16 years of experience in the information technology industry, primarily in the area of software development.Peter's technical skill set includes several client/server tools and relational database systems such as PHP, PowerBuilder, Visual Basic, Active Server Pages, and CA-Visual Objects.Peter is certified by ZEND Corporation on PHP 4.x and has contributed writing material for Using Visual Objects (Que Corp.), Using PowerBuilder 5 (Que Corp.), ASP.NET Bible (Wiley Pub.), and Web Warrior Survey on Web Development Languages (Course Technology).Peter is also currently a contributing editor and author to the on-line and in-print magazine called php|architect (www.phparch.com). He has also spoken several times at North American and International computer conferences including CA-World in New Orleans, USA; CA-TechniCon in Cologne, Germany; and CA-Expo in Melbourne, Australia.

Rasmus Lerdorf started the PHP Project back in 1995 and has been actively involved in PHP development ever since. Also involved in a number of other open source projects, Rasmus is a longtime Apache contributor and foundation member. He is the author of the first edition of the PHP Pocket Reference, and the co-author of the first edition of Programming PHP.

Solid PHP Guide

While not an important part of the book itself-the foreword was one of the best I have read in a technical book. It really describes how many people get started with PHP-it is accessible. This book provides a lot more structure than randomly placing PHP statements that have been googled together. I have not had the chance to review other editions, but it was noted that the material had been updated for the latest features of PHP version 5. With over 500+ pages, this feels like the O'Reilly books from the past that covered a lot of material and feels like a solid reference all around. One example was learning about Traits. While I knew of them from other languages, I had no clue that they were part of PHP until this book since I am only a causal user of the language. Chapter 7 dealing with Web Techniques will probably be immediately useful for someone trying to get a site out quickly. SQLite and MongoDB coverage was welcomed and showed that current updates are indeed included. While of course not complete by any means in scope, Chapter 12 Security was a great introduction to the various security concerns developers need to think about including XSS, filtering input, and session fixation to name a few. One minor complaint was the debugging chapter was very short and did not seem to add that much value to me. I would have liked to see the chapter about extending PHP with C from the 2nd edition, but that subject probably had a limited audience and I understand why it was likely removed.

Overall conclusion: Solid reference and learning guide for PHP. I don't think you could go wrong with "Programming PHP".

Well written for a programming text

I have a bad habit of buying programming books on a whim. That being said, this turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

* The examples are immediately useful. I've already been able to code minor things for work and home in the past 3 days; I've barely used PHP seriously in 10 years.
* Its modern. A lot of books tend to be obsolete by the time they come to print. This book has updated stuff for MySQL + NoSQL; object-oriented behavior; graphics; PDFs; etc. I expect to get much use out of it on some upcoming projects.

More of a reference than an introduction

I wouldn't recommend this book to people with no scripting/programming experience as it dives right in. It feels more like a reference book. The subject matter is more about the language itself rather than using examples on how to use php. It's a decent book for someone who knows how to program and needs a reference on PHP, but if I was a complete novice I'd feel overwhelmed as it assumes previous knowledge/experience in programming fundamentals.
