The Pakistan Paradox: Instability and Resilience (The Ceri Series in Comparative Politics and International Studies), by Christrophe Jaffr

Pakistan was born as the creation of elite Urdu-speaking Muslims who sought to govern a state that would maintain their dominance. After rallying non-Urdu speaking leaders around him, Jinnah imposed a unitary definition of the new nation state that obliterated linguistic diversity. This centralisation - 'justified' by the Indian threat - fostered centrifugal forces that resulted in Bengali secessionism in 1971 and Baloch, as well as Mohajir, separatisms today.

Concentration of power in the hands of the establishment remained the norm, and while authoritarianism peaked under military rule, democracy failed to usher in reform, and the rule of law remained fragile at best under Zulfikar Bhutto and later Nawaz Sharif. While Jinnah and Ayub Khan regarded religion as a cultural marker, since their time the Islamists have gradually prevailed. They benefited from the support of General Zia, while others, including sectarian groups, cashed in on their struggle against the establishment to woo the disenfranchised.

Today, Pakistan faces existential challenges ranging from ethnic strife to Islamism, two sources of instability which hark back to elite domination. But the resilience of the country and its people, the resolve of the judiciary and hints of reform in the army may open a new and more stable chapter in its history.

A depressing but very accurate description of Pakistan's destabilizing role: An International Migraine without relief
By Sohrabrostam
The granularity of discussions with extensive presentation of evidence makes this a good read. The 'Strategic Depth' foolishness, the jihadist factory, Islamist revival are all well known stories. However, the extent of duplicity, the sans forethought move to radicalize civil society and the integration of terror as a sophisticated state instrument protected by nuclear blackmail make this an important read.

Combining with Basharat Peer's book that showcases Pak terror in kashmir, Christine Fair and Ahmed Rashid's books, this book is yet another piece of the terror-jihad jigsaw puzzle depressingly falling into place. If I was the Indian Foreign and Defence Ministries, I would not hope for anything good anytime soon... if any the worst may be yet to come as a schizophrenic, crazy state intensifies its 'delusions of grandeur'.

The Invisible Circus, by Jennifer Egan

In Jennifer Egan’s highly acclaimed first novel, set in 1978, the political drama and familial tensions of the 1960s form a backdrop for the world of Phoebe O’Connor, age eighteen. Phoebe is obsessed with the memory and death of her sister Faith, a beautiful idealistic hippie who died in Italy in 1970. In order to find out the truth about Faith’s life and death, Phoebe retraces her steps from San Francisco across Europe, a quest which yields both complex and disturbing revelations about family, love, and Faith’s lost generation. This spellbinding novel introduced Egan’s remarkable ability to tie suspense with deeply insightful characters and the nuances of emotion.

First-novelist Egan examines the bittersweet legacy of the 1960s through the story of a teenage girl who travels to Europe to retrace the steps of her dead sister.

From Library Journal
The 1960s seem to have had a pervasive influence on the lives of those who were young then. Phoebe O'Connor saw those years in terms of her older sister Faith's life and death. In 1978, 18-year-old Phoebe decides to relive the final months of Faith's life and perhaps discover the truth about her death. She leaves San Francisco for Europe, determined to retrace Faith's journey using the precious postcards from Faith that she has saved for ten years. She visits London, Amsterdam, France, and Germany, where she meets Faith's lover, Wolf. Wolf decides to accompany her to Italy, and they have a passionate, feverish affair as they travel to the place of Faith's death. Phoebe learns the truth about Faith, the sister she has idealized, and about herself and her family. These self-realizations are often painful to read because they are so real. Egan's first novel is great reading. Recommended for most fiction collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
This sensitive debut novel puts theme before function in portraying the post-Boomer generation's nostalgia for the '60s they just missed out on. In 1978, 18-year-old Phoebe O'Connor is still haunted by the mysterious death, termed a suicide in 1970, of her hippie teenage sister Faith in Italy. Newly graduated Phoebe is feeling restless at home in San Francisco after discovering that her widowed mother is romantically involved with her boss. Phoebe's further horrified when her mother insists that her father, a would-be painter whose day job was being an IBM executive, had no talent. She spontaneously takes off for Europe to retrace Faith's steps in the days leading up to her death. Egan (whose stories have appeared in major magazines) takes a long time setting all this up, and in order to get the background in place, she often makes matters too convenient. It seems unlikely that an old friend of Faith's would run into Phoebe, recognize her (because of her resemblance to her sister), invite her to his apartment, talk about her sister, and then hand her a joint to deliver to his cousin in Munich. Later, when Phoebe arrives in Munich, there is a coincidence so huge and unbelievable that it almost destroys the earnest heart of this book. On the other hand, Egan does some fine writing. Descriptions of Amsterdam and London are so accurate they are almost tactile, and Phoebe's disappointment in finding that things are no longer quite so groovy as they used to be anywhere in the world is convincing. Eventually, she gets to the locus of Faith's despair and learns how the ideals of the '60s disintegrated. All of this is logical, but Egan has clearly set out to depict an entire generation rather than to tell a story. For example, Phoebe's brother is a 23-year-old millionaire with his own software company who exists only to show the alternative to the counterculture. Covers a lot of ground but sometimes stumbles. This hauntingly beautiful novel is why we read fiction.
By asdmom
Jennifer Egan's The Invisible Circus is a triumphant first novel. The riveting plot and fascinating characters make this book a page-turner, and the thematic reflections on memory and family ties keep the reader thinking of this book long after the last page. The gripping plot is at once a mystery and love story: Phoebe goes on a quest to understand her sister Faith so that she can begin her own life, free from the bonds of the unresolved family issues that Faith's life and mysterious death created. The portrayal of the relationship between Phoebe and Faith reflects more insightfully the bond between siblings than any other description I have read. Phoebe's impulsive trip to Europe results in a beautifully written adventure, filled with engaging vignettes and believable characters. Ultimately, however, it is not only the well wrought characters or carefully constructed plot that makes you love this book. Rather what makes this book a cut above are the stimulating reflections on the nature of memory, the search for transcendence, and the impact of even fleeting relationships on shaping everyday existence. The Invisible Circus will haunt you, leaving you pondering the elusiveness of memory and the ephemeral nature of experience. Faith's search for 'real life,' and the tragic consequences of her search prompts the reader to reflect on the nature of the ordinary versus the unusual, the struggle for balance between routine and risk. Ultimately this book helps the reader achieve a moment of transcendence, the highest achievement both in fiction and life.

Pat Conroy is right
By Manola Sommerfeld
I don't remember ever reading a better portrait of adolescent angst (or whatever that awful despair and loneliness that teens experience is called). Jennifer Egan truly remembers her teenage years well.

But Phoebe's is not your garden variety angst. She is marred by the deaths of her father and her older sister Faith. Her father she worshipped from a distance (as it was his choice). Phoebe also worshipped Faith, but especially after her death, to the point where she borrows the remains of her life: she sleeps in her room, she wears her clothes, she has no identity of her own.

After high school graduation Phoebe goes (escapes) on a journey across Europe, trying to figure out what happened to her sister. Along the way, she runs into her sister's old boyfriend, Wolf, and the pieces of the puzzle fall into place as if by magic.

Everything makes sense after the trip to Italy. Phoebe sheds her previous skin and embraces her new future. Wolf grieves and purges the regrets he had inside. There is a final resolution for everyone involved.

Some of the things i did not like so well about the book:

* At the very beginning, there were times where Phoebe was too adult (when in fact she was 5-6 years old). For example, she got so angry at Faith for diving from the highest board at the country club swimming pool. So young and already able to articulate her jealousy? Another example is when she witnessed her brother Barry ask their dad for help with a machine. The dad, who liberally ignored the two youngest kids, would seem distracted and in consequence disappoint Barry. Phoebe is able to express in her mind how Barry shouldn't even go there, as "she pitied her brother and wanted no part of his weakness".

* Why does Barry make a fortune in Silicon Valley about a decade too soon?

* Phoebe's encounter with Wolf is too contrived. Europe is huge for this chancy meeting to take place.

Some of the things i truly loved:

* Phoebe in all her awkwardness. She can be a total brat, she can be sensitive and pure in a way that only children can.

* I loved the analysis of the Hippie Generation of the 60s. What happened to the ideals? What happens when you grow older and look back? The loss of innocence was devastating for Faith.

* The cover, the tattered photograph of the two girls held together by tape.

* The end. It was perfect, it was devoid of sentimentality, and I loved it for that.

When i read Look at Me (which i really liked), i searched for the author on the web. I found her website. I wrote a note saying i enjoyed the book very much, and that hoped to attend any talks taking place in my area. Jennifer Egan herself replied (very cool!) and thanked me for the comments and said that as she's from the Bay Area she tends to stop by often. I was very surprised, but after all, writers write, so what's one e-mail more?

An exquisitely written coming-of-age story.
By A Customer
There is not a word out of place in The Invisible Circus; it's been a long time since I've read such beautifully crafted prose in a contemporary novel. But the portrayal of Phoebe is most amazing: She's an intelligent, troubled, and wholly sympathetic girl who comes right off the page. I was with her all the way, and with this wonderful novel as well.

However, if Cassie refuses to comply, she will lose everything she has come to know and treasure as her own. Julian, the elder brother of the estimable Stewart family, whom Cassie's father mandated she will marry into, values family duty and honor above all else. He can wield a pen in business matters and keep his respected, long-established family financially secure, but he knows nothing of love. He will ensure that Cassie adheres to the marriage agreement proposed by their fathers, though it means uniting her with his capricious younger brother, Edward. Dashing Edward Stewart has the charm and talent to win the heart of any young woman he chooses. The arrangement between the two families seems happily settled, but Cassie's misplaced affection makes her believe that it will be impossible to have both her heart's desire and the man she loves.

From Booklist
According to her father’s will, in order to keep her family estate, Lady Cassandra Phillips must marry a son of the Stewart family. Though Cassie finds rakish Edward, her betrothed, likable enough, she can’t abide his older brother Julian. However, when Edward goes missing on a trip abroad, she and Julian develop a begrudging friendship that soon blossoms into more. With the deadline to be wed looming, Cassie must decide whether following her heart is worth risking everything she’s ever cherished. Marks’ second historical romance, following Miss Quinn’s Quandary (2008), portrays Regency-era social mores that will appeal more to traditional romance readers than fans of Marks’ contemporary romances, Geek to Chic (2006) and Honeymoon Husband (2007). While her characters are feisty and engaging, Marks’ attempt at period-appropriate language is stilted at times. But she will have a chance to perfect her style: athirdhistorical romance is in the works. --Aleksandra Walker

Intriguing
By Sandy Milan
I quite liked this book even though there were some definite issues. It is written in a quaint style, probably more reminiscent of the times being written about. It is clean, which is great as far as I'm concerned but it is also a little peculiar. The H is a real staid stick and the h is all that is proper and good. They don't get off to a good start but attraction blooms in spite of themselves. The h is contracted to marry the H's younger brother and the H does everything he can to make it happen. When the 2 main characters do admit their feelings, the brother comes back to 'haunt' them. It was quite sweet but hardly memorable.

An Agreeable Arrangement
By Guest
A little slow reading at first, but it ended well. The ending did surprise me though concerning the brother Edward. I liked the characters of Cass and Julien and the way they slowly fell in love over the course of a few weeks. In the end, love did conquer all and Edward got what was coming to him !

Good Story, Weak Writing
By Becky
This is a sweet, clean, traditional regency romance. The story is simple and follows a familiar pattern. Parents arrange marriages for their children who are forced to comply through various legal documents. Hero and heroine fall in love, but they are not intended for each other and the resulting drama takes place. Aside from the overly simple plot, my main complaint about the book is the rather atrocious writing. I have read other books by this author and I liked them a lot. Perhaps this one was a debut novel that was never revisited? But the writing truly was abysmal. It was very stiff, formulaic, and often read like a 'See Spot Run' book. The historical details were also often incorrect, as if the author was not familiar with the time period. I would recommend this book to someone who likes this author or to young readers.

The shipping News : A Novel, by E. Annie Proulx

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Annie Proulx’s The Shipping News is a vigorous, darkly comic, and at times magical portrait of the contemporary North American family.

Quoyle, a third-rate newspaper hack, with a “head shaped like a crenshaw, no neck, reddish hair...features as bunched as kissed fingertips,” is wrenched violently out of his workaday life when his two-timing wife meets her just desserts. An aunt convinces Quoyle and his two emotionally disturbed daughters to return with her to the starkly beautiful coastal landscape of their ancestral home in Newfoundland. Here, on desolate Quoyle’s Point, in a house empty except for a few mementos of the family’s unsavory past, the battered members of three generations try to cobble up new lives.

Newfoundland is a country of coast and cove where the mercury rarely rises above seventy degrees, the local culinary delicacy is cod cheeks, and it’s easier to travel by boat and snowmobile than on anything with wheels. In this harsh place of cruel storms, a collapsing fishery, and chronic unemployment, the aunt sets up as a yacht upholsterer in nearby Killick-Claw, and Quoyle finds a job reporting the shipping news for the local weekly, the Gammy Bird (a paper that specializes in sexual-abuse stories and grisly photos of car accidents).

As the long winter closes its jaws of ice, each of the Quoyles confronts private demons, reels from catastrophe to minor triumph—in the company of the obsequious Mavis Bangs; Diddy Shovel the strongman; drowned Herald Prowse; cane-twirling Beety; Nutbeem, who steals foreign news from the radio; a demented cousin the aunt refuses to recognize; the much-zippered Alvin Yark; silent Wavey; and old Billy Pretty, with his bag of secrets. By the time of the spring storms Quoyle has learned how to gut cod, to escape from a pickle jar, and to tie a true lover’s knot.

Amazon.com Review
In this touching and atmospheric novel set among the fishermen of Newfoundland, Proulx tells the story of Quoyle. From all outward appearances, Quoyle has gone through his first 36 years on earth as a big schlump of a loser. He's not attractive, he's not brilliant or witty or talented, and he's not the kind of person who typically assumes the central position in a novel. But Proulx creates a simple and compelling tale of Quoyle's psychological and spiritual growth. Along the way, we get to look in on the maritime beauty of what is probably a disappearing way of life.

From Publishers Weekly
Proulx has followed Postcards , her story of a family and their farm, with an extraordinary second novel of another family and the sea. The fulcrum is Quoyle, a patient, self-deprecating, oversized hack writer who, following the deaths of nasty parents and a succubus of a wife, moves with his two daughters and straight-thinking aunt back to the ancestral manse in Killick-Claw, a Newfoundland harbor town of no great distinction. There, Quoyle finds a job writing about car crashes and the shipping news for The Gammy Bird , a local paper kept afloat largely by reports of sexual abuse cases and comical typographical errors. Killick-Claw may not be perfect, but it is a stable enough community for Quoyle and Co. to recover from the terrors of their past lives. But the novel is much more than Quoyle's story: it is a moving evocation of a place and people buffeted by nature and change. Proulx routinely does without nouns and conjunctions--"Quoyle, grinning. Expected to hear they were having a kid. Already picked himself for godfather"--but her terse prose seems perfectly at home on the rocky Newfoundland coast. She is in her element both when creating haunting images (such as Quoyle's inbred, mad and mean forbears pulling their house across the ice after being ostracized by more God-fearing folk) and when lyrically rendering a routine of gray, cold days filled with cold cheeks, squidburgers, fried bologna and the sea.

From Library Journal
Off the beaten track of contemporary American fiction in both style and setting, this remarkable second novel by the author of Postcards ( LJ 12/1/91) should capture the attention of readers and critics. Huge, homely Quoyle works off and on for a newspaper. His cheating wife Petal is killed in a car crash while abandoning him and their two preschool daughters. Wallowing in grief, Quoyle agrees to accompany his elderly aunt and resettle in a remote Newfoundland fishing village. Memorable characters--gay aunt Agnis, difficult daughter Bunny, new love interest Wavey, many colorful locals in their new hometown--combine with dark stories of the Quoyle family's past and the staccato, often subjectless or verbless sentences (bound to make English teachers cringe) to create a powerful whole. For most fiction collections.

Interesting
By Urenna
Quoyle, known by his surname, is the main character. His parents, originally from Newfoundland, didn’t consider him the ‘apple of their eye.’ His father was angry, disappointed, and derided Quoyle’s inability to learn how to swim or have an active interest in sports, and his brother, the parents’ favorite, often teased and verbally abused him. Born in Brooklyn, and raised in a small town in upstate New York, he was very tall, bulky, sort of clumsy and awkward. An emotional eater, self-conscious and lacking self-esteem, Quoyle had a prominent jutting chin, where he rested his hand, not because he was ‘thinking,’ but to conceal it.

Friendless, a college dropout, showing no sense of direction in his twenties or thirties, Quoyle worked odd jobs, and finally, through the friendship of a man named Partridge and his wife Mercalia, obtained a part-time job at the Mockingburg Record where Partridge worked as a copywriter.

Partridge, born with a caul, or what some might describe as a membranous veil across his face, saw Quoyle’s future. Quoyle knew nothing about writing news, but Partridge believed in him and reviewed all of his notes, even though Quoyle still lacked writing skills after six months.

Quoyle felt lost when Partridge and Mercalia moved to California.

While taking notes at the town’s civic meeting, he met Petal Bear, his future wife. They reveled in bliss for a week, and then six years of wedded misery. Petal engaged in pre-marital varietal and post-marital adulterous affairs without qualms. She despised Quoyle, spent most of her time away from home, verbally abused him, but managed to conceive two daughters, Bunny and Sunshine.

Their marriage lacked communication, conjugal satisfaction and loving companionship, but Quoyle loved Petal undeniably with a fierce love, forgave her failings, and was devoted to their daughters.

Quoyle’s father informed him on his answering machine at work that he and Quoyle’s mother, would euthanize themselves with their cancer medication. Around the same time, Petal foretold she no longer wanted to be married or be a mother. She attempted to sell their daughters to a pornographer.

After his parents died, his father’s sister, Agnis Hamm, arrived. Keeper of her own secrets, assertive, frank, strong-willed Agnis, became the motherly figure Quoyle never had. She’s the one that coaxed him into leaving New York and returning to their Newfoundland ancestral home with his daughters. There, Quoyle would become unlike the man he left behind in the States.

There is some dark humor in the book. The author, winner of a Pulitzer Prize, incorporated one, two, sometimes three word sentences and the Newfoundlander’s dialect, which I thought interesting. I enjoyed some of her writing. Yet she appeared to cluster several words and often, I think, wrote too much description that was at times tedious. Quoyle is not a strong character and I honestly didn’t see the plot with him. Aunt Agnis had plans. Quoyle appeared to follow her lead, but eventually, he would surprise me with his courage, innovative ideas, and writing skills at the Gammy Bird News, and finally companionship. I gave this book three stars.

A biography of place
By Arthur Digbee
This is a book in which nothing much happens, and passive characters are swept along without reacting much at all. And yet it’s famous and won a Pulitzer Prize. How did it do that without much character or plot?

The Shipping News is better seen as a story of place, the fictional town of Killick-Claw in a remote corner of Newfoundland. The place is changing as broader forces make the life of its fishermen untenable. The place changes the people, too. That makes it different from most novels, where the people change each other.

Terse prose, grammar incomplete. Suits the landscape, people.

Over time, I came to realize that the novel was unlike other novels I knew, and more like Felix Mendelssohn’s “The Hebrides.” Mendelssohn’s oceanic theme pounds away throughout the overture, and yet varies, sometimes rising from one appearance to the next. Proulx too.

I would recommend this book for tinder
By Sniff
How this book ever won the Pulitzer is beyond me. The author "pulps up" the narrative with overstated detail descriptions of everyday observations. I would recommend this book for tinder.
