worth seeking

There isn't a book by these authors that I haven't liked, and I wish that their work was more widely available in reprints. This little charmer puts children in the landscape enjoying the seasons alongside the animals in the country. The changes in people and animals' activities in relation to the weather illustrate the concept and make clear that the seasons move in a pattern that is cyclical. My 3 1/2 year old loves to read this, and I enjoy sharing it with her. Destined to be part of the "permanent collection".
BTW if you like the Provensens you may enjoy the books of Dahlov Ipcar as well!

The Provensens' The Year at Maple Hill Farm was one of my favorite books as a child, and I think this book inspired/preceded it by a couple of years. This book is much shorter and simpler than the later book but it's the same subject matter (changing of the seasons, the cycle of life). I'm using this with my toddler until he has the attention span for The Year at Maple Hill Farm, but it's not just a lesser substitute, it's a lovely lyrical poem that's accessible and inspirational for all ages.
