God's Gravediggers: Why No Deity Exists, by Raymond D Bradley

Few can offer a more experienced view on religion than Raymond Bradley. Having been raised as a ‘winner of souls for Christ’ in the 1940s, he spent the next 40 years as an atheist professor of philosophy and an outspoken critic/debater of religion.

Revered for his work in logic and his meticulous approach to debate, God’s Gravediggers is Bradley’s coup de grce to religion. A career’s worth of work on a subject that could hardly be more important. Approaching the moral, logical and scientific arguments – using rich analogies, rational arguments and examples that non-academics would understand – he explores not only whether God exists, but also what damage the concept of God does. A timely book in an age of religious fundamentalism, hatred and conflict.

“Bradley does not gloss over difficult points of logic and reasoning. A pleasure to read.”
Professor Graham Oppy, Chair of Council of the Australasian Association of Philosophy

“Bradley's forte is logic and he brings that to bear throughout the work. It is well-written and thoroughly absorbing. I have nothing but praise for his project.”
Theodore Drange, Professor Emeritus, West Virginia University

“From a young person's rejection of Christianity, to a mature philosopher's cogent critique of all religions. This compelling defense of atheism is a brilliant read.”
Professor Robert Nola, University of Auckland.

God is Dead! Seriously, he's dead already! He never existed in the first place. We know this. Bradley shows this.
By John W. Loftus
Raymond D. Bradley's book "God's Gravediggers: Why No Deity Exists", is a fantastic philosophical work showing what many of us already knew, that there is about a zero chance for any deity's existence. Bradley, Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, Simon Fraser University, former head of Philosophy Dept, University of Auckland, and now retired and living in New Zealand, tells us of God's gravediggers. Who are they? Bradley forcefully argues that they are logic, science and morality. For there is no good reason, no good evidence and no goodness itself in believing in God.

But wait? Haven't we heard of God's death before, from Nietzsche and many others? And isn't he/she/it still alive as a concept in the minds of millions of believers? Yes. But he's really dead. Believers just don't know it yet. As I will argue in my upcoming book, "Unapologetic", just like Norm Bates in the Hitchcock thriller Psycho, who continued believing his mother was still alive when she was dead, so also believers have propped up a dead God upstairs in a rocking chair and believe he's alive and talks to them too. I say good riddance.

This book of Bradley's is one I compare to the late Michael Martin's book, "The Case Against Christianity" (1995). I highly recommend them both, although I prefer "God's Gravedigger" since Bradley shares his own personal journey in it, and since he interacts with current literature since Martin's book.

I highly recommend this book, written by an experienced atheist philosopher
By David G. McAfee
With Ray Bradley's education and years of experience in secular activism, he destroys arguments for theism and outlines why gods likely don't exist (among other things). A form philosophy professor who debated William Lane Craig in the 1990s, Bradley has the knowledge to put forth arguments and the evidence to support them. Wherever you are on the belief spectrum, I highly recommend God's Gravediggers.

Excellent book
By Great Silence
I like reading good atheist books. It tests my Christian Faith, it makes me consider the alternatives, and whether my worldview is still the rational preferred option for me. In doing so, all I ask is that the author knows what s/he is talking about. The surge of penny horror atheist screeds can be dismissed without much thought or effort, for various reasons.

Books like this one though, forces the honest reader to grapple with some big questions. The author is well-versed in science and logic, and even his philosophical skills are above average. Through a mixture of well-placed (and well-deserved) sarcasm and pointed questions he manages to build a sustained and very credible attack on Christianity. He makes generous concessions where proper, and yet lands some heavy blows in his arguments.

Books like this have, years ago, convinced me that both Christianity and atheism are both positions that can be rationally held. To read a skillful book like this and to find no cogent or significant argument against your theistic position is simply an exercise in either dishonesty or intellectual ineptitude.

I would count this book as up there with some of Mackie's work as far as academic rigor is concerned, and with Ingersoll and Hitchens as far as eloquence and sheer argumentative skill is concerned.

Personally, I still believe that Christianity wins the race once the cumulative arguments are in, but this book certainly made me reconsider several of my positions. The theistic argument of objective morals as proof of God gets a particularly heavy working over, and justifies the price of the book in itself.

An excellent read. Not for the faint of faith.
